Mothers' Instinct

A taut domestic thriller about two suburban mothers and best friends whose bond fractures after a tragedy. Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain carry a lean, paranoid tale that trades on proximity and betrayal rather than spectacle. It's a pressure cooker for anyone who's ever wondered what you really know about the people closest to you.

Gone Girl2014

A masterclass in how quickly domestic intimacy can curdle into suspicion. Fincher builds the same architecture of doubt and misdirection, with a twist that reframes everything you've watched.

But The husband is insufferable by design, and some find the film's misanthropy exhausting rather than darkly funny.

The Woman in the Window2021

An isolated woman convinced she's witnessed something sinister, doubting her own mind as everyone else doubts her. Same claustrophobic dread, same question: who can you trust when your judgment feels unreliable?

But The plot hinges on contrivances that strain credibility if you think too hard about them.

Killing Eve2018

Two women locked in psychological orbit, addiction and fascination replacing affection. The intimacy between predator and hunter has the same intensity as two friends tearing each other apart.

But It's darker and more baroque than Mothers' Instinct; the surreal comedy won't be for everyone.

Something you would not have found on your own.

Babette's Feast1987

Both films know that the deepest betrayals happen in the space between people who are supposed to love each other. Babette's Feast unfolds that truth across a lifetime; Mothers' Instinct compresses it into days.

Two sisters and their quiet resentments, their restraint and sacrifice, explored across decades. A seemingly gentle film about a French chef cooking for a small religious community that operates as a study of how intimacy and unspoken desires poison relationships.

But It moves like liturgy, not a thriller. The tension is spiritual and internal; if you need plot to drive you, this will feel like nothing is happening.

Carol2015

Two women whose relationship exists in the spaces between respectability and desire, watched and judged by an outside world. Cine Blanchett and Rooney Mara burn with quiet intensity in a film about what happens when intimacy becomes dangerous.

But It's deliberately paced; if you want momentum over atmosphere, this will feel slow.

Single White Female1992

A woman's friendship becomes obsession and invasion, turning her own home into a trap. Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh create unbearable tension from proximity and the violation of trust.

But It's very much a 90s thriller; the style and some choices haven't aged seamlessly.

The Undoing2020

Hugh Grant and Nicole Kidman in a marriage that unravels after a death. Elegant, poisonous, and obsessed with how well we can know—or fool—the people we share our lives with.

But It's a limited series that doesn't quite maintain momentum; the final stretch feels rushed.

Sissy2022

An intense character study of a woman returning to her hometown to reconnect with an old friend. What follows is a psychological siege that's deeply uncomfortable and utterly gripping.

But It's brutal and transgressive; body horror and cruelty are weaponized throughout.

We Need to Talk About Kevin2011

A mother haunted by her relationship with her son, told in fractured time. Tilda Swinton is extraordinary, and the film's exploration of maternal guilt and resentment goes places most movies won't.

But It's punishing to watch. There's little warmth or resolution; it trades on accumulated dread and sorrow.

Aftersun2022

A father and daughter on holiday, observed in memory. Paul Mescal is heartbreaking, and the film builds profound sadness from small moments and what remains unspoken between people who love each other.

But It's glacially paced and asks the audience to do most of the emotional work; some will find that distance too great.

The Farewell2019

Both explore how a single event—death, or the idea of it—can invert our understanding of the people we trust most. One uses dark comedy, the other paranoia, but both are about secrets and what they cost.

A multigenerational family keeping a terminal diagnosis secret from the matriarch. Awkwafina carries a film about the lies we tell for love, obligation, and the fractures those lies create. It's intimate and funny and then it isn't.

But It moves between comedy and grief so fluidly that some viewers find the tonal shifts disorienting rather than affecting.

Nathalie...2004

Like Mothers' Instinct, it's about how obsession and suspicion can corrupt even the most intimate bonds. But where Mothers' Instinct deals in sudden paranoia, Nathalie... shows us someone deliberately poisoning her own life, step by step, aware of it but unable to stop.

A wife hires a woman to seduce her husband to test his fidelity. Isabelle Huppert is ice and control as it spirals into something far darker and more ambiguous. French, lean, and utterly committed to moral ambiguity.

But It's sexually charged and plays games with the audience; if you want clarity or likeable characters, you won't find them here.
