Ponniyin Selvan: Part I
A sweeping Tamil historical epic set in 10th-century Chola dynasty. A messenger races across kingdoms carrying secrets that could topple an empire, while a vengeful woman and political rivals circle like vultures. Visually stunning, ambitiously plotted, and steeped in South Indian mythology and politics. For those who want their action wrapped in history and grandeur.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love sweeping historical epics built on court intrigue, rival princes and old-fashioned sword-and-letters adventure, and don't mind savouring a large cast of schemers and loyalists.
Skip it if you want a tight, fast plot; this runs just under three hours and spends long stretches setting up its political board before the pieces start moving.
What it asks of you: Settle in for nearly three hours of patient world-building, with lavish sets and many characters to track, before the story gathers real momentum.

Bāhubali: The Beginning2015
A similarly massive Indian historical action film with dynastic intrigue, stunning visuals, and the same appetite for spectacle. It proved audiences wanted epics that felt genuinely epic.
But The plot is as melodramatic as it is complex, and the editing jumps can feel frenetic. Not for those who want subtlety.

Hey Ram2000
Kamal Haasan in a Ratnam period piece that braids history, politics, and personal vengeance together with the same visual ambition and emotional weight.
But Deliberately preachy in places, and doesn't always balance spectacle with clarity. Some will find it pretentious.

Padmaavat2018
Another Tamil-adjacent historical epic about kingdoms at war, with elaborate set design, sword-fighting, and the kind of romantic tragedy that fuels empires crumbling.
But The controversial gender politics make it difficult for some viewers, and it can feel more like pageantry than storytelling.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Decameron1971
Both use historical settings to explore how individual desires (romantic, political, carnal) destabilize empires and kingdoms through narrative threads that weave rather than follow a single hero.
Pier Paolo Pasolini's medieval ensemble film where society fractures and strangers' fates tangle. Like Ponniyin Selvan, it's about how power and desire reshape kingdoms through intersecting lives. But it's baroque, sexual, and anarchic where Ponniyin is grand and ordered.
But Pasolini's sensuality and irreverence toward period material will offend those seeking reverent history. Also explicitly sexual in ways a Tamil film isn't.

Magadheera2009
Telugu action-history with reincarnation, kingdoms, and a love story that echoes across centuries. The same appetite for mixing mythology with warfare.
But The tone shifts wildly between romance and violence, and it's long. Patience required.

Rang De Basanti2006
While contemporary rather than historical, it has the same Aamir Khan intensity, overlapping characters with hidden connections, and a moral urgency that builds.
But The tonal pivot partway through alienates some. It's not what you signed up for by the halfway mark.

The Sword of Tipu Sultan
A classic Indian historical TV series about dynasty and power with the methodical storytelling of period drama that rewards paying attention to politics and family.
But It's 1990s television pacing. By modern standards it moves slowly, and the production values show their age.

Devdas2002
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's opulent tragedy with the same visual gorgeousness and tragic inevitability. Period drama as emotional wallop rather than plot mechanics.
But It's primarily a love story about self-destruction, which some find indulgent. Also very long and steeped in melodrama.

1942: A Love Story1994
An earlier Ratnam romance set against historical backdrop, showing his early mastery of interweaving personal drama with larger events. Proof of concept.
But It's dated now, both in style and sentiment. The romance can feel overwrought to contemporary viewers.

Shōgun2024
Both are recent, ambitious historical dramas that trust the audience to follow multiple plotlines and political factions. Both make the architecture of power—who knows what, who can be trusted—more thrilling than simple good-versus-evil.
The 2024 FX miniseries captures what Ponniyin Selvan reaches for: political intrigue across a foreign court, messengers and schemes, a kingdom on the knife's edge, visual grandeur. It's a modern production that understands historical epic scope without Tamil cinema's emotional maximalism.
But It's English-language and set in feudal Japan, so the sensibility is entirely different. If you want the South Indian cultural specificity of Ponniyin, this won't deliver it.
