Rudhramadevi

A 165-minute Telugu-language historical epic about Rudrama Devi, a 12th-century Kakatiya ruler who defied convention by adopting a male identity to inherit her father's throne. Shot with lavish production design and visceral battle sequences, it's a costume drama for those who want spectacle alongside real stakes. Built for audiences invested in Indian history and unapologetic historical fantasy.

Padmaavat2018

Another grand historical epic with similar scale, production ambition, and a female protagonist navigating power in medieval India. Rich visuals and intricate court politics will feel familiar.

But At 163 minutes it's equally demanding of your time, and the romanticised portrayal of history may frustrate viewers seeking documentary accuracy.

Bajirao Mastani2015

Epic romance and warfare on a similar canvas, with comparable budget and ambition. Ranveer Singh's energy and the Marathi/Mughal setting offer a different regional Indian history told with equal grandeur.

But The love story dominates the historical narrative, which may feel slight if you came for the political intrigue rather than melodrama.

Chandni Bar2001

A different kind of Indian historical drama with Anushka Shetty in a transformative role. Raw, unflinching, and focused on survival against systemic oppression.

But Extremely dark and sexually violent. This is exploitation-documentary territory, not costumed fantasy—wholly different in tone and intent.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

The Warrior2001

Both are visually sumptuous films about individuals stepping outside assigned roles—one through assumed identity, one through renunciation. Both treat costumes and landscape as characters.

A British-Indian co-production shot in Tibet and Rajasthan with Irrfan Khan as a former soldier undoing his past. Visual grandeur comparable to Rudrama Devi, but quieter and more meditative on violence and redemption.

But Glacial pacing. This is an art film, not an action epic. Some will find it glacial to the point of dissolution. It rewards patience in ways Rudrama Devi does not require.

The Hundred-Foot Journey2014

A gentler film about cultural collision and inherited identity. If you respond to stories about people defying their assigned roles, this Anglo-French comedy offers that theme without the warfare.

But The stakes are domestic and small-scale. You'll feel the loss of spectacle, and the tone is whimsical rather than dramatic.

Jodhaa Akbar2008

Another meditation on female agency within dynastic marriage and kingship. Aishwarya Rai's performance and the Rajasthani setting provide historical grandeur with emotional depth.

But Romance is central to the story in ways that may feel safer, more conventional, than Rudrama Devi's stranger premise.

Ponniyin Selvan: Part I2022

A recent Tamil historical epic with comparable scale, based on celebrated source material. The Chola dynasty setting, maritime intrigue, and political betrayal mirror the sprawling ambitions of Rudrama Devi.

But Split into two films. You'll want to commit to both, and the first ends on a cliffhanger that demands investment in the conclusion.

The Legend of Bhagat Singh2002

An Indian historical film about rebellion and identity, though focused on independence struggle rather than medieval kingship. The same commitment to Indian history and dramatized heroism, minus the fantasy elements.

But Contemporary political drama instead of ancient dynastic warfare. The registers are very different, and it won't scratch the costume-epic itch.

Rang De Basanti2006

Another Aamir Khan vehicle about young people fighting systemic injustice. If you engage with stories of individuals defying circumstance in Indian cinema, this is foundational.

But Modern-day setting and a very different tone—this is idealistic youth drama, not medieval warfare. The connection is thematic rather than aesthetic.

Veer-Zaara2004

Both films interrogate what identity means when it's legally or socially assigned. Both ask: who do you become when your inherited role contradicts who you are?

An Indian-Pakistani romance that touches on national identity, cross-cultural marriage, and duty to country. Spectacular production design and the kind of earnest historical sweep that Rudrama Devi shares.

But Fundamentally a love story in ways Rudrama Devi is not. If political intrigue is why you're here, the romance will frustrate you.
