Me Before You
A glossy British weepie built on the reliable machinery of forbidden love: a broke, bubbly caretaker and the wealthy, embittered quadriplegic man she's hired to look after fall for each other in a castle full of old money and older grief. It's tender, funny in places, shamelessly manipulative in others, and ends exactly where the trailer warned you it would. Bring tissues, not scepticism.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you want a love story driven by the friction of two very different people sizing each other up, with dry English humour carrying the lighter scenes.
Skip it if you prefer sentiment kept at arm's length; this one plays its feelings openly and a little heavily, and its sweetness can feel syrupy.
What it asks of you: A 110-minute run of unhurried rhythm in cosy English settings, asking you to stay patient with the slow build and to meet its feelings halfway.

The Fault in Our Stars2014
Two witty teenagers with cancer fall in love and refuse to be defined by it — the same trick Me Before You pulls, but younger, sharper-tongued, and just as devastating by the third act.
But The banter can tip into precociousness, and you'll see the emotional gut-punch coming from a mile off.

The Notebook2004
The gold standard of star-crossed, class-divided romance — a poor boy, a rich girl, disapproving parents, and a love that outlasts everything including memory itself. Pure, unashamed, effective weepie craft.
But It's been so thoroughly memed and parodied that the earnestness can feel almost quaint now.

One Day2011
Two people revisited on the same date over twenty years, watching timing and circumstance keep almost-working out. If you liked watching Lou and Will's impossible clock ticking, this stretches that ache across decades.
But The structure is gimmicky and the ending lands like a slap most people saw coming from the trailer.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Love Story1970
Same engine — love arriving on borrowed time — built decades earlier with none of the modern polish, proving the formula never needed it.
The film that basically invented the terminal-illness weepie as mainstream entertainment — spare, unfussy, devastating in under ninety minutes, and the direct ancestor of every tear Me Before You wants from you.
But Its restraint will feel almost too quiet after modern melodrama; there's no visual gloss to hide behind.

A Walk to Remember2002
A rebellious boy and a quietly devout girl with a secret illness — earlier, softer, more small-town than Me Before You, but built from the exact same emotional bricks.
But It's aimed squarely at teenagers and the dialogue shows its age; subtlety was never the plan.

Five Feet Apart2019
Two hospitalised teens with cystic fibrosis fall for each other despite being forbidden physical closeness — a neat, literal twist on the desire-versus-limitation ache at the centre of Me Before You.
But It leans hard into YA melodrama and Instagram-ready cinematography over anything resembling restraint.

P.S. I Love You2007
Grief-stricken widow receives posthumous letters from her dead husband guiding her back to living — if you liked the film's back half more than its courtship, this is basically all back half.
But It swings wildly between broad comedy and grief in a way that can feel tonally whiplashy.

Atonement2007
Class-crossed lovers, a wealthy house, a devastating decision that ruins everything that follows — the same DNA as Me Before You but with literary ambition and a genuinely gutting final twist.
But It's slower, more literary, and considerably sadder without any of the softening humour.

Still Alice2014
Julianne Moore's Oscar-winning turn as a linguistics professor losing herself to early-onset Alzheimer's swaps the romance for family, but keeps the same unflinching gaze at a body and mind under siege.
But There's no love story to soften it — this is grief and dignity without the fairy-tale wrapping.

Sweet November2001
A free-spirited woman takes in a buttoned-up businessman for a month that changes his life, with a terminal-illness reveal saved for later — same bones as Me Before You, dressed differently.
But It's dated, a little twee, and the central conceit hasn't aged especially gracefully.

The Sea Inside2004
Where Me Before You uses the right-to-die question as a love story's engine, this makes it the entire film — the same moral debate, stripped of romance and dressed as courtroom drama.
A Spanish quadriplegic man spends decades fighting for the legal right to end his own life, based on a true story — it takes the question Me Before You treats as backdrop and puts it on trial.
But It's subtitled, politically pointed, and offers none of the romantic softening — this is the argument, unsweetened.

Gleason2016
Swaps fiction's tidy arc for footage of an actual family navigating the exact dignity-versus-decline question Will Traynor's story only pretends to answer.
A documentary following former NFL player Steve Gleason after his ALS diagnosis — unscripted, funny, brutal, and full of the same question about what a life is worth once your body stops cooperating.
But There's no narrative safety net here; it's real deterioration, real fear, filmed by the people living it.
