Love Story
A brisk, unabashedly sentimental romance between a wealthy Harvard student and a sharp-tongued working-class music student, whose love survives family disapproval only to collide with something crueler. It's short, plainly told, and built to make you cry — less a subtle film than the template modern tearjerkers still copy. Best watched knowingly, tissues ready, if you want earnest heartbreak without three hours of buildup.

Terms of Endearment1983
Same aching mix of romance, family friction and terminal illness, but broadened into a whole mother-daughter saga with more room to breathe, more comedy, and a Debra Winger performance that earns every tear it demands.
But It's longer and more sprawling than Love Story, taking its time getting to the part that will actually wreck you.

The Notebook2004
The class-divide romance updated for a new generation, with the same structure of impossible love, disapproving parents and a bittersweet framing device that turns first love into a lifelong ache.
But It leans harder into sentimentality, and its twist-heavy ending is more manipulative than Love Story ever bothers to be.

A Walk to Remember2002
Young love shadowed by illness and mortality, told with the same unashamed sincerity — a good-girl/bad-boy pairing standing in for Love Story's mismatched sweethearts, tears more or less guaranteed.
But It's aimed squarely at teenagers, and its earnestness can tip into corniness for anyone over twenty-five.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.

It's the story Love Story quietly remakes — forbidden love, disapproving elders, a fatal illness half-hidden — just staged as full-blown golden-age Hollywood tragedy instead of understated 1970s restraint.
Greta Garbo plays a dying courtesan loved by a young aristocrat her family despises — the exact class-divide-plus-terminal-illness engine of Love Story, thirty-four years earlier and twice as operatic.
But The performance style is big, theatrical 1930s melodrama — if you want naturalism, this will feel like a different language.

Titanic1997
Takes the doomed-lovers-across-class-lines formula and blows it up to epic scale, but the emotional core — young love racing an ending you already know is coming — is identical.
But Three hours and a sinking ship is a much bigger commitment than Love Story's brisk hundred minutes.

The Fault in Our Stars2014
Swaps Harvard for hospital wards but keeps the same blueprint: witty, doomed young lovers, one of whom is dying, both refusing to be defined by it.
But The dialogue is more self-consciously clever than Love Story's plain-spoken sincerity — charming to some, grating to others.

Beaches1988no page yet
Trades romantic love for a decades-long friendship but keeps the same devastating late-film swerve into illness and loss, plus a soundtrack built to make you cry on command.
But It's about friendship rather than romance, so if it's specifically the love story you want, this shifts the target.
Me Before You2016no page yet
Another class-crossed romance where love collides with a failing body, this time reversing who's rich and who isn't, and asking harder questions about what love can and can't fix.
But Its ending is more controversial and its politics around disability have drawn real criticism — worth knowing going in.
Steel Magnolias1989
An ensemble of Southern women trading barbed jokes in a beauty salon, until illness quietly reroutes the story — proof the tearjerker formula works even without a central romance.
But There's no love story at its centre, so it's a bigger tonal shift than the others here.

Sweet November2001no page yet
A less remembered but sincere cousin: a woman with a terminal secret takes in a stranger for a month, running the same playbook of joy shadowed by an ending you can feel coming.
But It's softer and more diffuse than Love Story, with less bite and a dated early-2000s gloss.
Kal Ho Naa Ho2003no page yet
Same structural secret as Love Story — a character living out a hidden countdown while insisting on love and normal life — delivered through Bollywood's musical, comic, three-hour maximalism instead of restraint.
A Bollywood romance that hides a terminal diagnosis behind musical numbers, comic subplots and a love triangle, proving the same trick — joy shadowed by a secret ending — works in a wholly different film grammar.
But It's nearly three hours long, subtitled, and stops for song-and-dance sequences — a real gear shift if you've only watched Western romance.
Harold and Maude1971
Made the same year as Love Story, it takes the same core idea — a love affair defined by an impending ending — and runs it through comedy instead of melodrama, proving the engine still works inverted.
A death-obsessed young man falls for a septuagenarian who teaches him to actually live — a love story built entirely around mortality, told as tender, deadpan comedy rather than tragedy.
But It's genuinely strange and darkly funny where Love Story is straight-faced sincere — if you want a good cry, this isn't it.
