If I Stay
A supernatural romance about a talented cellist caught between life and death after a car accident, forced to choose whether to wake up or let go. It's a tearjerker with genuine emotional stakes, anchored by a strong lead performance. For anyone who's ever wondered what it would take to fight for the people you love—or whether you should.

The Fault in Our Stars2014
A beautifully acted romance between two teenagers facing mortality. Like If I Stay, it refuses to patronize its young characters or shy away from real grief and the impossible choices it demands.
But The emotional manipulation can feel calculated at times. If you've built up resistance to YA tearjerkers, this won't crack through.

Me Before You2016
Another adaptation of a weepie that actually earns its tears. Explores whether love is reason enough to stay, with a mature treatment of bodily autonomy and what we owe each other.
But The central moral question is divisive and some find the resolution manipulative rather than moving.

The Notebook2004
A romance that spans decades and includes a present-day framing device about memory and devotion. Like If I Stay, it asks what we choose to hold onto when everything else falls away.
But It's sentimental in ways that can feel dated now. The gender dynamics are very of their time.

Something you would not have found on your own.
Ikiru1952
Same DNA: a person facing mortality and the sudden clarity it brings about what actually matters. Both suggest that choosing to stay (or to live) is an active, ongoing commitment, not just biological accident.
A Japanese bureaucrat discovers he's dying and spends his final weeks asking whether his life meant anything. Kurosawa's masterpiece about meaning-making and connection. Nothing supernatural, just profound.
But It's in Japanese with subtitles and moves at a deliberate, almost meditative pace. It won't give you answers—only better questions.

A Walk to Remember2002
A clean-living young woman and a troubled young man fall in love—then face a heartbreaking diagnosis. It understands the specific ache of loving someone you might lose.
But The moral framing around the heroine's virtue is heavy-handed and reads as dated piety.

Five Feet Apart2019
Two teenagers with cystic fibrosis navigate romance, isolation, and the physical distance between them. Tender and specific about what it means to want someone you cannot safely touch.
But Can feel more like a disease-of-the-week movie than a genuine character study. The romantic arc sometimes overshadows the lived reality of chronic illness.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower2012
A sensitive portrait of adolescent confusion, friendship, and the way people survive trauma through connection. Quietly devastating without being manipulative.
But The central revelation is heavy and may upset you. Some find the nostalgic tone cloying rather than comforting.

Now Is Good2012
A young woman with terminal cancer decides to live fully in her remaining time. Avoids mawkishness by treating her as a real person with messy desires, not a saint.
But The indie-film earnestness can feel slight. Doesn't quite have the emotional grip it's reaching for.

Always1989
A pilot killed in a crash becomes a guardian angel to his grieving girlfriend. Spielberg's most underrated film; it's about choosing to let go and live, not cling to what's gone.
But The tonal shift into magical realism jars some viewers. It's sentimental by design and doesn't pretend otherwise.

Life as a House2001
A dying man and his estranged son rebuild their relationship and a literal house before time runs out. Manages to be about mortality without becoming maudlin.
But The contrivances of the plot can feel heavy-handed. Some elements haven't aged particularly well.
