Educating Rita

Two rooms, two voices, and ninety-odd minutes of pure verbal sparring: Michael Caine's burnt-out literature don meets Julie Walters' hairdresser determined to read her way out of her life. Adapted from Willy Russell's play, it's funny, tender and quietly furious about class and self-invention. Walters is a revelation; Caine has rarely been better as a man discovering he might need saving too.

Alan Bennett's whip-smart Oxbridge comedy shares the same delight in language for its own sake, with teachers as damaged and funny as the students they're supposedly guiding.

But It's an ensemble piece rather than a two-hander, so the intimacy of Rita and Frank's classroom gets spread thin.

It's the direct ancestor of the 'transform someone through speech and education' plot Educating Rita reworks — same bones, decades earlier, with the power dynamics starker and the ending refusing any comfort.

Shaw's own screenplay, decades before My Fair Lady sanded off its edges. Higgins is crueller, Eliza sharper, and the class fury Educating Rita inherited sits right there on the surface, unresolved.

But It's stagier and more clipped than modern ears expect, and the romance stays far more ambiguous than you'll want it to.

A young woman's education, literal and otherwise, gets complicated by an older man offering her a bigger world. Rita's hunger for more, seen from a darker angle.

But The mentor here is far more compromised, and the tone leans melancholic where Rita stays warm and funny.

Willy Russell again, this time a Liverpool housewife rediscovering herself on a Greek holiday. Same wit, same tenderness, same conviction that it's never too late to become someone else.

But There's no Frank-and-Rita chemistry here — it's largely a one-woman show, so the dynamic feels completely different.

A different kind of talent breaking out of a different kind of working-class box, with a mentor who sees what nobody else does. British, funny, and unexpectedly moving.

But It's about dance, not books, and leans harder into music and spectacle than Rita's quiet classroom scenes.

The granddaddy of the 'teach me and watch me become someone new' story, done as a lavish musical. Higgins and Eliza are Frank and Rita's ancestors, minus the whisky.

But It's a full musical with none of Rita's grit, and its class politics feel dated in ways the 1983 film never does.

Both are about what a teacher awakens in a student and what that costs. Educating Rita asks the question gently and with jokes; Whiplash asks the same one and answers it with cruelty.

A mentor pushing a student past every limit, except the classroom is a jazz band and the stakes are somebody's sanity. Same engine as Frank and Rita, redlined and turned savage.

But It's tense where Rita is warm, and the mentor here is a monster rather than a flawed friend — come with different expectations.
