Torchwood

Torchwood follows a secret British agency hunting aliens and supernatural threats in contemporary Cardiff. It's Doctor Who's grittier sibling—darker, sexier, more willing to kill its characters and break its own rules. For fans who loved the high stakes of Who but wanted something rawer, with the emotional weight to match the spectacle.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like spin-off sci-fi that trades monster-of-the-week wonder for adult shades, flirtation, and a team that bickers under pressure like a family.

Skip it if you want sunny optimism or self-contained episodes you can dip into, since the grit and sexual candour run hard and the stories often lean on heavy subject matter.

What it asks of you: Expect a fairly long haul: four seasons of roughly fifty-minute episodes, with a tone that shifts from brisk early adventures to much bleaker stretches later.

If you liked this

Doctor Who2005

The parent show that inspired Torchwood. Modern Doctor Who has the same blend of sci-fi adventure and emotional gut-punches, with expanding casts and serialized storytelling that rewards long-term investment.

But The tonal whiplash between comedic and tragic can feel uneven, and some seasons lean too heavily on fan service rather than genuine story.

The Expanse2015

Space opera that treats its ensemble cast like real people with real consequences. Politics, alien threats, and character death all hit hard. Builds to genuinely consequential stakes across seasons.

But The first season is slower and more deliberately paced than you might expect; it demands patience before the payoff arrives.

The Expanse poster

Fringe2008

An FBI team investigating supernatural anomalies with genuine chemistry and serialized plotting. Walks the same line between procedural mystery and apocalyptic mythology, with the same willingness to upend its own world.

But The show's middle seasons lose focus; some episodes feel like filler, and the mythology doesn't always tie together cleanly.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Moonlight2016

Both are about outsiders learning to navigate a world that wasn't built for them—and both trust their audiences to find meaning in small, quiet moments between the spectacle.

A three-part meditation on a Black man's coming-of-age and identity in modern America. Shot through with tenderness and visual poetry. It rewires how you think about vulnerability, masculinity, and what it means to be seen.

But Deliberately paced and sparse; dialogue is minimal, and meaning lives in silences and glances. If you need explicit exposition, you'll feel like you're watching someone else's memory.

The Sopranos1999

The show that proved TV drama could be as complex and morally ambiguous as cinema. Antiheroes with real psychological depth; every character has contradictions that make them feel alive.

But It's slow, introspective, and contains graphic violence. If you want constant action, this will feel like therapy sessions interrupted by brutality.

The Sopranos poster

Battlestar Galactica2003

Serialized sci-fi that asks hard questions about survival, identity, and what it means to be human. Strong ensemble cast where any character can die, and the show is better for the risk.

But The later seasons lose narrative discipline; some plot threads feel abandoned, and the finale divides fans sharply.

Battlestar Galactica poster

Penny Dreadful2014

Gothic Victorian horror with a stellar cast and literary ambition. Treats monsters and outcasts with genuine sympathy while delivering genuine dread. Beautifully shot and written.

But Deliberately slow-burn and atmospheric; if you need constant plot momentum, the languid pacing will frustrate you.

The Americans2013

Two Soviet KGB officers pose as an American couple during the Cold War. Masterclass in tension, character work, and the slow erosion of certainty. Every season raises the stakes emotionally and narratively.

But Relentlessly bleak and morally exhausting. There is almost no lightness, and watching people you care about suffer week after week can feel punishing.

Warehouse 132009

A secret government agency protects magical artifacts. Lighter tone than Torchwood but with genuine heart, character-driven episodes, and a team that feels like family. Solid ensemble chemistry throughout.

But The tone can feel uneven—sometimes playful, sometimes trying for darkness—and it doesn't always know what it wants to be.

Warehouse 13 poster

Orphan Black2013

A woman discovers she's one of many clones, each distinct and fully realized. Tatiana Maslany's performance alone justifies the watch; the show balances conspiracy thriller plotting with genuine intimacy.

But The mythology gets increasingly convoluted; by later seasons, keeping track of plot threads requires serious attention.

Orphan Black poster

Utopia2014

Both treat conspiracy as something that corrodes from within—that the real danger isn't always the external threat, but what it does to the people trying to stop it.

A group of strangers are hunted for possessing a mysterious manuscript. British thriller that's visually stunning, narratively relentless, and genuinely unsettling. No safe harbor, no easy answers, characters destroyed by forces beyond their control.

But Graphically violent and deeply cynical; the show offers no comfort and minimal catharsis. Also cancelled on a cliffhanger, which some find infuriating.

Severance2022

Both explore what happens when institutions demand that their employees become something other than human—and both are unafraid to show you the cost.

Workers undergo a procedure that separates work memory from personal life. Haunting, surreal science-fiction that's visually precise and genuinely disturbing. Raises big questions about labour, identity, and what we owe each other.

But Only one season exists so far; it ends on enormous unanswered questions and won't satisfy anyone looking for closure or traditional resolution.
