Television series

Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight

A 12-episode anime about teenage girls auditioning for a prestigious theatre troupe, where their ambitions collide with something stranger—a magical competition that tests their bonds, talent, and what they're willing to sacrifice. Musicals meets magical girl show, visually stunning and emotionally thorny, for people who love theatre and aren't afraid of the weird.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you are drawn to backstage rivalry and musical stage performance, where the ache of a childhood promise plays out through song, grit and competitive nerves.

Skip it if you want frequent spectacle, because much of this twelve-episode run is spent on competitive nerves and private doubts rather than on the performances themselves.

What it asks of you: Twelve episodes of about 25 minutes each, paced like a slow build rather than a quick hit, with feelings that take time to surface before the stage numbers land.

Carole & Tuesday2019

Two girls chase a music career on Mars in this gorgeous, melancholic space opera. Gorgeous animation, killer soundtrack, and a story about artistic partnership that'll wreck you in the best way.

But It's 24 episodes and can feel slow; the sci-fi framing is secondary to the character drama, which isn't for everyone.

Revolutionary Girl Utena1997

The godmother of this kind of story—a girl enters a duelling tournament that's really about identity, power, and what it means to be yourself. Surreal, theatrical, endlessly reinterpretable. This is where it all started.

But Twenty-year-old animation won't appeal to everyone, and the narrative is deliberately abstract and repetitive in ways that frustrate some viewers.

Violet Evergarden2018

A young woman learning to feel through writing and connection. The episodes are standalone but build into something profound about grief and love. Stunning production, genuinely moving.

But It can feel slow and precious; some episodes border on maudlin, and the premise—beautiful girl learning emotions—risks feeling thin on paper.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Singin' in the Rain1952

Both understand that performance is how we become ourselves. Both are about the promise made young, the reunion, and the moment you realize your dream is real. Both believe in the transformative power of getting on stage.

The template for everything: Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds in a love letter to theatre and performance. It's pure joy—dancing, music, and genuine magic on film. A masterpiece that rewards repeat watching.

But It's deliberately artificial and staged, almost camp; if you want realism or contemporary musical grammar, this will feel mannered and slow.

Kill la Kill2013

High-octane action about a girl fighting her way through a power structure, with ludicrous energy and genuine heart. The animation is kinetic art, and it commits fully to its absurdity while saying something real about power.

But The fanservice is aggressively present and not to everyone's taste; it can feel exhausting rather than fun if that aesthetic isn't your thing.

New Game!2016

A girl joins a game development studio and finds her tribe. It's warm, funny, and understands the specific joy of making something together with people you care about. Deceptively smart about creative work.

But It's gentle comedy-drama with low stakes; if you want conflict and tension, this will feel slight and safe.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica2011

A 12-episode magical girl anime that demolishes the genre from inside. Gorgeous and heartbreaking, with one of anime's greatest final episodes. It'll stay with you.

But It gets darker than Revue Starlight and some find the tone shifts manipulative; it's also become so culturally iconic that the twist feels less shocking now.

Hanasaku Iroha2011

A girl moves in with her grandmother and learns to run a traditional hot spring inn, discovering community and purpose. It's gentle but never simple, with real growth and gorgeous backgrounds that make you want to visit.

But The pacing is deliberately slow and meditative; character development matters more than plot, which will bore anyone wanting propulsion.

Little Witch Academia2017

A girl attends magic school and learns to believe in herself through friendship and persistence. It's earnest, beautifully animated, and genuinely funny. A perfect palate-cleanser after something dark.

But It's whimsical and optimistic to the point of saccharine for some; there's minimal real conflict or moral complexity.
