Neighbours
Other titles called Neighbours: the 1952 film.
Neighbours is a daily soap opera that ran for nearly four decades, following interconnected lives on a single Melbourne street. It's a masterclass in character-driven storytelling where the mundane becomes compelling: who's dating whom, who's keeping secrets, what scandal's brewing next. For viewers craving warmth, humour, and genuine emotional stakes delivered in digestible 30-minute chunks, it's endlessly rewatchable comfort television.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy a soap that takes its time, where a whole street's worth of neighbours becomes familiar over years and small domestic squabbles carry real warmth.
Skip it if you want self-contained stories or a show that wraps up; with 9,361 episodes across 41 seasons, you would be stepping into decades of ongoing history.
What it asks of you: Each episode runs about half an hour and arrives daily, so it asks for patience and a long commitment rather than a single weekend binge.

Home and Away1988
Australia's other great soap, equally good at mixing heartbreak with humour. Same DNA—small community, big emotions, characters you'll miss when they leave. A natural companion watch.
But It's also a 30-year commitment if you want the full story. Some decades drag more than others, and the pace can feel glacial.

Coronation Street1960
The British template that inspired Neighbours. Older, grittier, but built on the same principles: tight community, interconnected plots, characters who feel like neighbours you actually know. Proof the format endures.
But It's in black-and-white for the first era, and the pacing is even slower. British reserve can feel distant compared to Neighbours' warmth.

EastEnders1985
Another British soap that premiered the same year, but darker and messier. If you loved Neighbours' ability to break your heart while making you laugh, this takes that emotional whiplash further. Characters genuinely suffer here.
But The misery-to-joy ratio tips far toward misery. It's gripping, but relentless. Less cosy than Neighbours, more punishing.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Glitch2015
Both centre on tight-knit Australian communities where secrets compound and character history matters more than plot. Glitch uses the format's emotional logic but darkens it.
An Australian small-town drama—same landscape as Neighbours, same community focus—but with magical realism. Dead people return to life; characters must process grief and regret. Takes the soap format's emotional sincerity and adds genuine stakes and strangeness. Utterly hypnotic.
But It's a proper thriller, not a comfort watch. Darker and more unsettling. Only three seasons, so brief compared to Neighbours' long unfolding.

Emmerdale1972
Yorkshire village drama with the same long-form character development. Brilliant at building years of backstory into current chaos. Less glossy than Neighbours, more organic—feels like real lives accumulating complications.
But Rural setting and Yorkshire accents are a barrier for some viewers. Pacing is glacial compared to Neighbours' snappier plots.

The Young and the Restless1973
American daytime soap with phenomenal writing at its peak. More melodramatic than Neighbours, more fashion and luxury, but the character work is equally superb. Proof that soap opera is an art form.
But It's twice as long per episode. Some eras are bloated; others are gems. Finding the good decades takes work.

Brookside1982
British soap set on a single street—essentially Neighbours' closer cousin. Tackled social issues with real bite while keeping character warmth. Cancelled in 2003, so it has an ending, which is rare for soaps.
But It's darker and sometimes bleak in ways that make Neighbours look cheerful. Some storylines feel trapped in the 80s in bad ways.

Dynasty1981
If you want the glamour and melodrama turned up to eleven, this is the soap for people who think Neighbours is cosy. Same addictive logic—scandal, romance, betrayal—just in a mansion instead of on a street.
But It's campy and overheated. If you loved Neighbours' warmth and realism, this trades both for spectacle and absurdity.

Grange Hill1978
British school drama with soap-like serialisation but faster pacing and real youth perspective. Building long-term storylines while keeping things funny and propulsive. Characters genuinely grow and leave; it feels earned.
But It's school-focused, so if you loved Neighbours' adult relationships and property drama, this won't scratch that itch. Also increasingly dated in later series.

Sunset Beach1997
Late-90s American soap that brings Neighbours' warmth into a resort setting. Less grounded but equally committed to emotional stakes and character continuity. A palate cleanser if you want Neighbours but don't want to commit to decades.
But It only ran five years, so less accumulated history. Late-90s production values look very dated. Cancelled mid-storyline, so no resolution.

Succession2018
Both are multigenerational sagas about power shifts within closed groups. Same DNA as soap opera—accumulating history, surprise alliances, recurring betrayals—but Succession applies it to dynastic wealth instead of Ramsay Street.
A prestige drama about a family constantly scheming, allying, betraying each other—the soap opera structure but written for peak television. Character work as meticulous as Neighbours, plotting as intricate, but with literary ambition. Addictive and superbly crafted.
But It's vicious and bleak. No warmth, no genuine kindness. If you loved Neighbours for its heart, this is the opposite. Also very expensive and prestigious, which can feel alienating.

The White Lotus2021
Both build tension from character proximity and embedded resentments. Where Neighbours lets them simmer for years, The White Lotus forces a rupture in days. Same pressure-cooker logic, different timeline.
An anthology where each season is a self-contained resort drama. Neighbours' gift for making ordinary interactions explosive, but compressed into six hours and dialed toward dark comedy and murder mystery. Brilliant character actors doing brilliant work with thin air.
But It's cynical where Neighbours is warm. Every character is damaged or awful; there's no genuine decency. Also grim—expects you to watch people suffer, and some of that suffering is hard.
