Unter uns
Unter uns is a German daily soap that's been running since 1994, anchored in the lives of residents on Cologne's Schillerallee. It's intimate, character-driven storytelling where relationships fracture and rebuild, where ordinary people navigate love, betrayal, work and family. Designed for viewers who want to check in regularly with people they recognize, it rewards investment over time.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy a long-running soap that keeps its neighbours on one Cologne street and lets their small domestic dramas simmer for years, the way a daily habit does.
Skip it if you want a tightly plotted story that resolves itself, since this is serial television with no finale in sight and storylines that wander and loop back.
What it asks of you: A daily habit rather than an evening: roughly 25-minute episodes on weekdays, slow accumulation of talk and kitchen-table scenes that rewards regular viewing more than a binge.

Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten1992
The original German soap juggernaut; if you want to understand what Unter uns learned from and built upon, this is the template. Decades of interconnected lives in Berlin, same daily commitment.
But It's even longer-running and more sprawling, which means even higher stakes on investment. The Berlin setting and character roster are completely separate from Unter uns.

Verbotene Liebe1995
RTL's other prestige soap, also launching mid-90s Germany. Similar DNA to Unter uns—daily drama, ensemble casts, romantic tangles—but set in Cologne's wealthy circles rather than working-class streets.
But It ran for 27 years and then ended. Completing it requires serious dedication. Different social class focus changes the flavor entirely.

Coronation Street1960
The grandfather of all street-level soaps. British, working-class, same philosophy of checking in on neighbors' lives. Proves the format works across decades and decades, everywhere.
But It's British, so the humor and speech patterns are foreign. At 60+ years, the backlog is genuinely daunting. Slower pacing than modern German TV.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Tin Drum1979
Both are quintessentially German stories about community and family navigating change, but where Unter uns is contemporary and domestic, The Tin Drum uses history and surrealism to interrogate how those relationships survive upheaval.
Günter Grass's German masterpiece about growing up during the Nazi era and beyond. Like Unter uns, it's rooted in ordinary German family life, but with a magical-realist edge and historical weight that transforms the intimate into the universal.
But Three hours long, experimental in structure, and deeply disturbing. The historical trauma is never glossed over. Not a comfort-watch; it demands intellectual engagement.

EastEnders1985
Another British daily, but faster and grittier than Coronation Street. If Unter uns feels like home, this feels like the messier, rowdier neighbor's kitchen. Same commitment-based storytelling.
But Deliberately bleak and working-class in a specifically British way. The London accent takes adjustment. Several recasts over decades can jar long-time viewers.

Emmerdale1972
British rural soap with the same daily rhythm and long-term character investment. Smaller cast, tighter community dynamics. Shows how the soap formula adapts to village life instead of urban streets.
But Village setting means less urban energy. Over 50 years old with massive cast turnover makes entry points confusing. Tone shifts noticeably between decades.

The Young and the Restless1973
American daily soap, same bones as Unter uns but set in a fictional Wisconsin town. Proves the format works globally. Decades of interconnected families, professional drama, romance, betrayal.
But American soaps move faster and emphasize melodrama over realism. At 50+ years, the backlog is genuinely overwhelming. Tone can feel dated to modern viewers.

Neighbours1985
Australian daily soap, street-based like Unter uns, with the same philosophy of regular check-ins on interconnected lives. Lighter tone than European soaps, excellent at balancing humor and heartbreak.
But Australian humor and slang require adjustment. Ran for 37 years before cancellation, which means completionism is impossible now. Significantly poppier and less grounded than Unter uns.

Home and Away1988
Another Australian daily, but beach-set and with slightly more adventure mixed into the romance and family drama. Still commits to long-form character storytelling like Unter uns, just with more sunshine.
But The resort setting feels less like a real community than a street does. Australian TV production values and acting style are distinct. Leans heavier on action and spectacle than Unter uns does.

Shortland Street1992
New Zealand daily set in a hospital instead of a street, but same soap DNA: ensemble cast, interconnected lives, daily episodes, character investment over years. Proves the format works in any setting.
But Hospital setting makes it feel more like a workplace comedy than a community drama. New Zealand accent and production style take adjustment. Ran 30+ years with massive cast churn.

RUN2020
Both explore how people we thought we knew can become strangers, and vice versa. But where Unter uns watches this play out across a community over years, Run compresses it into one intense journey between two people.
A miniseries about a mother and son reunited after 20 years on a cross-country train journey. It's economical and focused—the opposite of sprawling soap logic—but shares Unter uns's fascination with how relationships fracture and tentatively rebuild over time.
But Only three episodes means no long-term investment; it ends when you're starting to settle in. The intimacy is claustrophobic rather than communal. British production, so tone and pacing are completely different.
