General Hospital
General Hospital is daytime's longest-running drama, a Port Charles soap opera where medical crises collide with tangled loves, criminal conspiracies, and decades of interconnected history. It's serialized storytelling at maximum melodrama—you can drop in anytime or follow obsessively. It's for people who love character over plot, who want their drama operatic, and who don't mind waiting weeks for payoff.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love soap opera's sprawling, serialized machinery, where a decades-long web of romances, feuds and returning faces rewards patience more than any single plot.
Skip it if you want a self-contained story you can finish in one sitting, or melodrama piled high enough to feel like a chore rather than a treat.
What it asks of you: Each hour asks you to keep a sprawling cast of relationships in your head across months, and to accept heightened emotion without a break for irony.

If you liked this
The Young and the Restless1973
The gold standard of soaps: stellar writing, genuine chemistry between leads, and storylines that balance family legacy with contemporary urgency. Geniune emotional stakes.
But If you prefer tightly plotted television, soap pacing—slow, digressive, repetitive—will frustrate you. Some performances feel dated.

Days of Our Lives1965
The most cinematic soap ever made. Gorgeous locations, bonkers mythology, and a willingness to go stranger and wilder than any network drama. Endlessly inventive.
But The strangeness can tip into unintentional comedy. Plot coherence occasionally surrenders to spectacle. Tone shifts wildly.

The Bold and the Beautiful1987
Tight, propulsive storytelling with high production values and leads you genuinely root for. It respects your time while delivering proper soap opera drama.
But Less character depth than rivals. Fashion-industry gloss can feel shallow. Fewer of the weird mythology tangents that make soaps interesting.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Passions1999
Both are about what happens when a soap opera stops apologizing for melodrama and commits fully to it. Passions is what General Hospital might become if it leaned into weirdness.
The final great American soap, created by a Broadway writer. Fantasy elements, genuine scares, and a writer who treated the form as seriously as prestige drama. Utterly singular.
But Cancelled in 2008 on a cliffhanger. Some of the supernatural stuff is genuinely campy. It requires commitment to dozens of interconnected families.

Coronation Street1960
British soap that proves the form works best grounded in real neighbourhoods. Extraordinary character writing, humour that lands, proper tragedy that lands harder. Warm.
But Slower than American soaps. Realism means less melodrama, which some find dull. Heavy regional accent can require adjustment.

EastEnders1985
Gritty, brilliant British soap where working-class lives intersect messily. Handles dark subject matter with rare seriousness. Character writing is exceptional.
But Very bleak. Violence and abuse are central to storylines in ways that won't suit everyone. Accents thick enough to require subtitles initially.

Neighbours1985
Australian soap with lighter touch than American counterparts but genuine warmth. Excellent at mixing comedy with serious stuff. Teen characters actually feel like people.
But Lower budget shows everywhere. Tone can be uneven—it doesn't always know if it's comedy or drama. Some acting is genuinely rough.

Emmerdale1972
Yorkshire soap that balances village warmth with real darkness. Excellent at family sagas, surprisingly sophisticated about relationships, and genuinely affecting.
But Can feel provincial and claustrophobic. Accent barrier is real. Some storylines repeat across the decades.

All My Children1970
Peak daytime melodrama with charismatic leads, family dynasties, and unabashed emotionality. Purely entertaining in the best sense. Zero self-consciousness.
But Dated production values. Some plots are absurd even by soap standards. It ended in 2011; closure is partial.

Santa Barbara1984
It's what happens when a soap gets a movie-studio budget and a literary ambition. Same melodramatic DNA as General Hospital, but dressed in California sunshine and film-stock glamour.
Visually sumptuous soap with film-quality production. Sophisticated writing, genuine romance, and the confidence to do long-form storytelling that trusts its audience completely.
But Ended in 1993, so no ongoing payoff. Rich-people problems can feel distant. Some early-90s gender dynamics haven't aged well.
