Guiding Light
Guiding Light is the longest-running drama in American television history, a 57-year CBS soap opera that defined the form. It's a character-driven ensemble show about the interlocking lives, loves, and moral crises of a small-town community. If you've never watched a classic soap, this is the Mount Rushmore entry—sweeping, melodramatic, achingly human.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like slow-burning serial storytelling, where a town's relationships pile up over decades and a single episode can be a small detour rather than an event.
Skip it if you want a tight, self-contained story, because this moves at a meandering pace across hour-long episodes that rarely feel like they're building toward a single payoff.
What it asks of you: Expect hour-long episodes and a commitment measured in years rather than evenings, with slow reversals, repeated reunions and attention to small domestic moments.

Days of Our Lives1965
The closest contemporary peer to Guiding Light's scope and influence. Multi-generational storytelling, genre-bending (from romance to sci-fi to horror), and characters you'll genuinely invest in across decades.
But Soap pacing is deliberately slow; episodes build in increments. Modern network TV has trained us to expect faster payoff than soaps deliver.

The Young and the Restless1973
Started as a direct response to Guiding Light's dominance and became equally legendary. Sharp writing, complex moral characters, and that perfect soap balance of intimate character work and high-stakes drama.
But Nearly 50 years in, continuity is dense. You'll be walking into an established world with decades of history you don't know.

All My Children1970
Pioneered soap opera storytelling that takes social issues seriously while never losing melodrama. Iconic characters and a genuine sense that anything could happen to anyone you care about.
But Ended in 2011, so no new episodes, though it has been revived in limited form. There's a finality that some find unsatisfying.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Best Years of Our Lives1946
Both are obsessed with how families sustain themselves across time, but Ernaux uses form to fracture memory while GL used duration to contain it. Opposite approaches to the same material.
Annie Ernaux's adaptation is a formally audacious film that does what no soap can: it jumps across decades non-chronologically, showing how time and history reshape a family's internal mythology. Devastating and precise about how memory works.
But It's an arthouse French film, deliberately paced, no melodrama, no plot in the conventional sense. If you want soap opera emotion without soap opera storytelling, this is it. Otherwise: patience required.

General Hospital1963
The soap that finally surpassed Guiding Light in longevity. Known for balancing hospital procedural elements with character melodrama, and willing to take bigger swings with genre storytelling.
But Still running means jumping in feels less like a contained experience. The show has been reinvented so many times it lacks historical cohesion.

Loving1983
Created by Douglas Marland, who wrote some of Guiding Light's best years. Intimate small-town storytelling with an emphasis on quiet character work and genuine emotional stakes.
But Lasted only 13 years and is harder to find than the major soaps. Less epic scope, more intimate—which is a feature, not a bug, but not everyone wants that.
As the World Turns1956
The third-longest-running soap and a direct contemporary of Guiding Light's golden age. Created by Irna Phillips, who also created Guiding Light. Shares DNA and sensibility while developing its own voice.
But Ended in 2010. Like all classic soaps, it demands patience and commitment; the style will feel artificial to modern eyes at first.

Search for Tomorrow1951
The only soap that predates Guiding Light and ran almost as long (34 years). A fascinating comparison point for how soap storytelling evolved and what made Guiding Light's formula more durable.
But Actually ran longer on radio before TV, and the earlier years are partly lost. Feels more quaint and dated than Guiding Light, even accounting for era.

Parenthood2010
If Guiding Light is what soap opera excellence looks like, Parenthood is what that sensibility becomes when transplanted to premium drama: fewer characters, higher stakes per person, but the same faith that a family's interior life sustains drama for years.
The closest modern drama gets to GL's sensibility: a multi-generational family at the center, each member equally important, storylines that span years not episodes, real consequences for moral choices. No camp, all heart.
But Only six seasons—nowhere near Guiding Light's scope. Modern TV's need for 'conclusion' means it wraps things up rather than the way life actually unfolds. Ends where GL barely warmed up.
