My Lovely Sam Soon
- Romantic comedy
- Light-hearted
A romantic comedy about a gifted baker who lands a job at an upscale restaurant after a humiliating breakup, only to clash with the owner—a prickly, wealthy man she can't stop thinking about. Warm-hearted and funny, it's about finding yourself by accident when you're too busy licking your wounds. For anyone who loves banter that turns into something real.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like romantic comedies built on bickering chemistry, where two stubborn people spar over everything and the fake-relationship setup keeps turning sincere, with a warm kitchen-and-bakery backdrop.
Skip it if you want a tight, fast-moving romance; at 16 episodes of roughly seventy minutes each, the middle stretches with family meddling and rival-suitor complications that can feel padded.
What it asks of you: Settle in for a long, leisurely haul of around sixteen hour-plus episodes, with light, bantering comedy that lets the romance unfold slowly and asks for patience more than close attention.

Boys over Flowers2009
Another Korean drama that nails the chemistry between a spirited ordinary woman and a coldly handsome rich man. The antagonism that melts into tenderness hits the exact same nerve, with equally addictive tension and laugh-out-loud moments.
But If you've seen it, you'll recognize the beat-by-beat structure. The class dynamics feel more dated now, and some of the plotting relies on contrivance.

What's Wrong with Secretary Kim2018
A perfectly calibrated romance between a demanding boss and his unflappable secretary who decide to fake-date, then don't. It has the same playful banter, the same slow-burn warmth, and a lead couple with genuine chemistry and humor.
But The boss-secretary power imbalance might feel uncomfortable to some viewers, even though the show is aware of it. It's also very familiar rom-com territory if you've watched much K-drama.

Descendants of the Sun2016
A grander, more dramatic romance that still has the witty push-pull between leads. It adds action and higher stakes, but keeps the same focus on two people choosing each other while everything else burns. Hyun Bin is even better here.
But The war-zone setting and darker tone might feel like a different show entirely if you're after something light. Some violence and real tragedy sits alongside the romance.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Jiro Dreams of Sushi2011
Both understand that the real story is not the romance or the conflict, but the moment someone realizes they love what they do. Sam Soon's baking is as central as the plot twist.
A documentary about an 85-year-old master sushi chef in Tokyo pursuing perfection in his craft. Like Sam Soon, it's about someone who loves what their hands make, and it captures that quiet joy of watching an expert be brilliant at something small and true.
But There's no plot or dialogue to speak of. If you need narrative momentum or drama, this is glacially slow and meditative. Some find it boring; others find it transcendent.

She Was Pretty2015
A woman disguises herself to win back the man who bullied her in school. It's messier and more comedic than Sam Soon, but has that same alchemy of banter, workplace romance, and a couple who bring out the best in each other.
But The premise hinges on deception that goes on too long, and some of the humor is broad. If you need your leads to be honest with each other from the start, this will frustrate you.

Coffee Prince2007
A gender-bending romance between a woman pretending to be a man and a fastidious café owner who hires her. It has the same warmth and chemistry, plus a willingness to be genuinely weird and tender in equal measure.
But Some of the gender-play humor feels dated now. The pacing drags in the middle and the ending takes a while to arrive.

My ID Is Gangnam Beauty2018
A woman who's had cosmetic surgery and a distant man form a connection at university. It's lighter than Sam Soon but shares that banter-to-love arc and the same focus on two people learning to be less guarded around each other.
But The look-based humor can feel shallow, and the romance doesn't have quite the spark of better K-dramas. Supporting characters are thinner than you'd like.

Crash Landing on You2019
A South Korean heiress and a North Korean army officer meet by accident and fall for each other. The chemistry is electric, the comedy is smart, and it has that same sense of two people from different worlds discovering they fit.
But The political backdrop and cultural differences can feel didactic. The second half loses some of the levity and leans hard into melodrama.

Business Proposal2022
A woman poses as a secretary to vet her company's CEO before dating him, then falls for him instead. It's a zippy update of the formula—fast, funny, and genuinely charming, with two leads who feel like friends before lovers.
But It's glossy and lightweight to the point of weightlessness. If you want emotional depth or surprise, this is pure comfort food with no substance.

Amélie2001
Both films center on an ordinary woman who seems small until you realize she's the most important person in the room. Both are in love with small human moments.
A whimsical French film about a shy woman who changes people's lives from the shadows, then learns to live her own. It has the same sweetness, the same magical-realism warmth, and a heroine who's funny and tender and quietly fierce.
But It's aggressively precious and twee—if you hate whimsy or pastel color palettes, this will make you want to scream. The pacing is dreamlike, not plot-driven.

Squid Game2021
Both are peak Korean television from the same tradition, but they prove the medium's range. Knowing Sam Soon helps you understand Squid Game's anger.
A Korean drama that exploded globally—but watch it for the opposite reason you'd watch Sam Soon. It's brutal, despairing, and structurally brilliant. It shows what Korean TV can do when it abandons romance entirely for something true and terrible.
But It's violent, nihilistic, and deeply depressing. No comfort, no warmth, no happy ending. If you want escape and lightness, this will punish you for watching it.
