My ID Is Gangnam Beauty

A Korean drama about a formerly bullied student who undergoes cosmetic surgery and returns to school transformed—only to discover that her real insecurity wasn't physical. Tender, funny, and sharply aware of how appearance and identity tangle together. For anyone who's felt unseen, or wondered if changing yourself is ever really the answer.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like school-age romance that takes appearance-based cruelty seriously, and enjoy watching a shy character slowly learn to stand up for herself, with a friendship doing the heavy lifting.

Skip it if you want a sharp, fast romance; this one is gentle and often sentimental, and its pacing lingers on hurt and self-doubt more than on the love story you might expect.

What it asks of you: Sixteen episodes of roughly an hour each, paced patiently, with heavy stretches where humiliation lingers before any warmth arrives.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo2016

A charming romance between a weightlifter and a swimmer that's just as interested in their individual dreams and growth as it is in their relationship. The banter is exceptional and it never feels small.

But The second half loses some momentum, and if you're allergic to earnest sports-drama sincerity, the tone might wear you down.

Extraordinary You2019

A girl realizes she's a supporting character in a romance comic and decides to rewrite her own story. It's cleverer than it sounds, with real pathos under the playfulness about self-determination and being seen.

But The meta-narrative gets confusing in places, and some of the comic-book logic doesn't hold up under scrutiny.

My Love from the Star2013

An alien who's been asleep for 400 years falls for a struggling actress in modern Seoul. It's funny, gorgeously shot, and their chemistry is genuinely electric. A Korean drama classic for good reason.

But The sci-fi elements are largely window dressing; if you want actual speculation about aliens, you'll be disappointed.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Undone2019

Both explore how we construct identity through others' eyes—Mi Rae through the male gaze and surgery, the protagonist here through marriage and social role. Each has to discover what remains when the mirror is taken away.

A woman realises her long marriage has become a habit rather than a love, and must decide who she is when she stops being someone's wife. Devastatingly adult, honest about compromise and regret without being cynical.

But There's no romance in the traditional sense, and the ending doesn't resolve neatly. It's about reckoning, not comfort.

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon2017

A woman with superhuman strength works for a video-game CEO and falls for him. Hilarious, action-packed, and surprisingly tender about what it means to be underestimated.

But The tone whiplashes between comedy and genuine menace. Some violent episodes sit uneasily next to the romance.

Romance Is a Bonus Book2019

A divorcée in her 50s re-enters the workforce as an editor and finds unexpected romance. Warm, intelligent, and refreshingly unhurried about second chances.

But If you want glamorous leads or high drama, the quiet maturity here might feel slow.

Oh My Ghost2015

A shy woman afraid of intimacy is possessed by a lustful ghost who decides to help her lose her virginity. Funnier and sweeter than that premise suggests, with real chemistry between the leads.

But The ghost plot doesn't integrate smoothly, and the tonal shifts between comedy and sentiment are jarring.

Because This Is My First Life2017

A young woman moves into a man's house in a fake marriage arrangement. It's about practicality, loneliness, and discovering home in another person. Quietly excellent.

But Very low stakes and domestic. If you need plot momentum or spectacle, this will feel like nothing happens.

After My Death2018

Both centre on a girl recovering from brutal social rejection, but where Gangnam Beauty moves toward healing, this film sits unflinchingly in the damage—exploring the same wound from the inside.

A stunning, surreal South Korean film that follows a teenage girl through school, friendship, and invisible cruelty. It's artfully fragmented and psychologically precise about how bullying and shame reshape a person.

But It's formally experimental and deeply sad. No resolution, no comfort, and it requires active watching. Some may find it bleak rather than cathartic.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire2019

While Gangnam Beauty asks whether changing your appearance changes how you're seen, this film argues that being seen—really looked at—is what transforms you. Both understand that beauty is ultimately about recognition.

A French artist paints a reluctant aristocrat in secret, and they develop an intimate connection. It's visually rapturous, achingly tender, and entirely about being truly seen by another person—the real thesis of beauty.

But Deliberately paced, dialogue is sparse, and there's no conventional plot. It's a mood and a feeling, not a story with turns.
