Romance Is a Bonus Book
- Romance
- Light-hearted
A warm romance about a successful publisher and a struggling single mother reconnecting in the same workplace. Set in the world of books and publishing, it balances genuine emotional stakes—financial hardship, self-worth, second chances—with lighter workplace comedy. It's for anyone who likes their romance grounded in real life rather than fantasy, where both characters feel like actual people with actual problems.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy slow-burn office romances driven by sharp banter, where a long friendship and a lot of unspoken history do more of the work than grand gestures.
Skip it if the tone stays gentle and sitcom-light, so if you want romance with real bite or quick plotting, it may feel soft and drawn out.
What it asks of you: Sixteen one-hour episodes you can settle into over a few evenings, with patience for quiet stretches between the flirting and the workday chatter.

Something in the Rain2018
Korean romance that trusts quiet moments and adult complications over melodrama. It has the same gentle pace, the same sense of two people slowly understanding each other, and the same refusal to make everything about tears and dramatic gestures.
But Slower than some K-dramas, with long stretches where nothing 'happens.' If you need constant plot movement, it can feel static.

Crash Landing on You2019
A wealthy man and a resourceful woman forced into proximity; they work because they're both funny and real under the rom-com setup. It has Romance's warmth and the same confidence that character matters more than high stakes.
But Much bigger in scale and much sillier. If you're coming for intimate, grounded romance, this veers into fantasy territory hard.

One Day2024
A British limited series about two people across decades, similarly focused on how real life—jobs, money, family, disappointment—shapes a relationship. It's romance as endurance, not passion, and it's completely convincing.
But Bleak in places. This is not a comfort watch; it's a reality check dressed as a love story.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Thirty, Nine2022
Both centre women in their 30s reckoning with what they've lost and what they're still building; both trust the audience to care about ordinary disappointment as much as spectacular crisis.
Three women in their late 30s facing mortality, marriage, career and friendship. It looks like a K-drama; it has the shape of one—but it's actually an unflinching look at how little time we think we have and how we spend it. No neat resolutions. The romance here is secondary and tangled and real.
But Genuinely sad in ways that don't get tidied up. If you want escapism, this is the opposite.

Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha2021
A dentist and a drifter in a small town. Same formula—two people, real problems—but with the same K-drama lightness and the same sense that love is about choosing to show up.
But The second half loses momentum and the supporting cast gets overwhelming. It's better as a concept than it is at ending.

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon2017
A woman with superhuman strength and a CEO; it's got workplace romance, comedy that actually lands, and a female lead who's allowed to be competent and mess up. Same mix of real and fantastical.
But Action subplot feels obligatory and drags. You're there for the two of them; the crime plot is a distraction.

Her Private Life2019
Museum curator and a K-pop star CEO; extremely charming, extremely funny, and genuinely interested in how two people with secrets learn to be honest. The banter is excellent.
But Relies heavily on cuteness and fantasy elements. If you want grit, you won't find it here.

Because This Is My First Life2017
A woman living in poverty moves in with a lonely man. Starts as practical arrangement, becomes about real connection. Funny, kind, and genuinely about money and loneliness in ways most romances aren't.
But Drags in the middle and the final arc loses the plot. It coasts on charm when it should be building.

The Good Doctor2017
Korean original about a surgical prodigy with autism; not a romance, but it has the same warmth about people finding belonging through work and unexpected friendship. Same emotional register.
But Medical procedural means it's solving problems in neat arcs. If you want continuity and depth over neat resolutions, it won't satisfy.

What's Wrong with Secretary Kim2018
CEO and his perfect secretary of nine years; the hook is she quits, and he has to learn she's a person, not a fixture. Clever premise, genuinely well-made, charming throughout.
But Pretty surface-level. It's not interested in why these people are who they are, only in the fact that they're cute together.

Okja2017
Both use a corporate/publishing world as backdrop for a story about protecting something human from systems designed to exploit it; both believe tenderness is radical.
A girl and a giant genetically-modified pig navigate a corporate machine trying to exploit what they love. Bong Joon-ho film, so it's visually stunning and tonal whiplash—comedy, action, genuine horror, all at once. Nothing like a K-drama but somehow everything like one.
But Aggressively weird. It's not interested in being likeable or easy. The tonal shifts will feel jarring if you want consistency.

Taxi Driver2021
Both are Korean dramas about people on the margins finding purpose in work, but they ask opposite questions: one asks 'how do you belong again?', the other asks 'what if you never can?'
A bereaved man becomes a vigilante taxi driver; it's a Korean series but it's a noir revenge thriller, not a romance. Brutal, beautifully shot, about how trauma shapes you. If Romance showed you how to build life, this shows you what happens when people can't.
But Violent and dark. There's no warmth here; it's about what happens when you stop trying to belong and start trying to burn things down.
