Be Melodramatic

Three women in their thirties navigate Seoul's entertainment industry while wrestling with love, ambition and the gap between who they thought they'd be and who they are. It's warm and funny without being saccharine, grounded in real friendship and the specific texture of creative work. For anyone who's felt the peculiar dread of your thirties arriving.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like friendship-centred stories where career panic and romantic awkwardness get teasing, knowing humour, and where messy tenderness is taken as seriously as the jokes.

Skip it if you want a tight, plot-driven romance, since this is a long, meandering run where much of the pleasure lies in simply spending time with the characters.

What it asks of you: Sixteen episodes is a real commitment, and it moves between workplace pressure, late-night talks and romance without hurrying, so it rewards settling in rather than dipping in.

Crash Landing on You2019

A South Korean rom-com with genuine wit and chemistry between leads. It has the same balance of humour and sentiment, plus the warm specificity of Korean storytelling that makes everyday moments feel earned rather than manufactured.

But The premise is outlandish and requires goodwill in the first episode. If you need heightened drama to stay invested, this leans too hard into comedy-first storytelling.

Something in the Rain2018

Quietly devastating about desire, timing and the courage required to choose yourself. It shares Be Melodramatic's refusal to sentimentalise adulthood and its interest in how friendships hold us up during romantic upheaval.

But The pacing is slow and meditative. It won't satisfy anyone craving plot momentum or clear resolution; it's about sitting with discomfort.

Thirty, Nine2022

Three women in their late thirties grapple with mortality, legacy and whether their lives turned out as planned. It has the same emotional intelligence about female friendship and the specific weight of reaching an age where childhood dreams feel either real or finally impossible.

But It pivots into heavier territory than Be Melodramatic. The tonal shift toward existential dread won't work if you came for lighter entertainment.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Mulholland Drive2001

Both explore how the entertainment industry and ambition reshape identity and friendship, but Mulholland Drive asks those questions through warped reality rather than domestic comedy.

Two women chase dreams in Los Angeles; the film splinters into several possible versions of their story. Like Be Melodramatic, it's about the distance between the self you perform and the self you are, told through female friendship and the entertainment industry—but in Lynchian register, where every frame unsettles.

But It's deliberately obscure and resists meaning. If you need coherence and plot clarity, this will feel like watching someone's dream rather than a story.

My Mister2018

A masterpiece about quiet people rebuilding themselves. Both shows understand that grown-up drama lives in the space between what you say and what you feel, and both trust the audience to sit with that ambiguity.

But It's slow, subdued and deeply melancholic. There's no comedic relief and no catharsis—only the possibility of small survivals.

Business Proposal2022

A workplace rom-com with actual stakes and character development. It shares Be Melodramatic's interest in how work and love tangle together, and in women who are competent at what they do.

But The central premise relies heavily on deception playing out exactly as the plot needs it to. If contrivance bothers you, the mechanics show.

Her Private Life2019

A woman in her late twenties works in the art world while secretly running a massive fan account. It's playful and sexy and genuinely interested in female desire and friendship dynamics, with similar warmth about the mess of becoming yourself.

But The second half softens the edges and becomes more conventionally romantic. The tonal shift diminishes what made it distinctive early on.

Move to Heaven2021

A series about a man and his nephew who help people downsize—an unusual premise that becomes profound. Like Be Melodramatic, it finds depth in small moments and treats its characters' quiet struggles with genuine respect.

But Each episode's emotional arc is fairly predictable. If you're watching for surprise, you'll sense the beats coming.

Romance Is a Bonus Book2019

A woman re-enters the publishing world after fifteen years. Both shows care deeply about work, about women over thirty, and about the specific anxiety of feeling left behind by your own life.

But The romance element is more central and less complicated than the friendship arcs. It can feel safer and more conventional than Be Melodramatic's sharper character work.

What's Wrong with Secretary Kim2018

Entertaining workplace rom-com with crackling chemistry and laugh-out-loud moments. It shares the same energy of smart people trying to figure out what they actually want versus what they're supposed to want.

But The humour is broader and the emotional registers less varied. It's lighter all the way through—not bad, just a different temperature.

Twenty Again2015

Both are fascinated by women in their thirties and beyond who don't fit the expected narrative, but Twenty Again believes in pure redemption where Be Melodramatic settles for muddled growth.

A woman returns to university at forty after raising her family. It's Korean television at its most radically optimistic about second chances and unfinished selves. The emotional generosity toward women starting over is moving and specific.

But The melodrama is heavier and the magical thinking broader. It's a different Korea than Be Melodramatic—more openly sentimental and less ironic.

8 Women2002

Both understand female friendship as a form of performance, but 8 Women makes that visible through literal theatrical presentation rather than through comedy and drama braided together.

Eight women trapped in a house during a murder mystery, performed like a musical. It's French, playful, arch—a portrait of female bonds through comedy and performance. Utterly different genre, same emotional core: how women perform for each other and what that performance costs.

But It's theatrically stylised in a way that feels very 2002 and very French. If you want naturalism, this is elaborate artifice by design.
