She Was Pretty

A joyfully messy Korean rom-com about mistaken identity and the weight of first love, where a woman pretends to be her glamorous best friend to reconnect with her childhood sweetheart—now a powerful magazine editor who doesn't recognize her. It's funny, touching, occasionally ridiculous, and entirely aware of its own absurdity. Perfect if you want to feel something warm and silly at once.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like romantic comedies where the emotional core is a long-buried childhood bond and the humor comes from vanity and self-consciousness, with a sincere heart under the glossy surface.

Skip it if you want a brisk, tightly plotted rom-com, since its premise stretches out over sixteen episodes of roughly seventy minutes each, with scenes that circle the same insecurity.

What it asks of you: Settle in for around an hour and change per episode, a slow-warming show that rewards patience and moves between lightheaded comedy and quieter, more wounded moments.

Boys over Flowers2009

The spiritual predecessor to the fake-girlfriend trope, with similarly lush romance, comedy chaos, and a wealthy-man-meets-ordinary-girl dynamic that absolutely works. Iconic K-drama that defined the genre.

But Runs 25 episodes, so you're committing. The lead male's initial coldness can feel harsh, and dated production values might date it further than 2009 feels.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo2016

Another Hwang Jung Eum triumph—warm, funny, and deeply romantic without ever losing its humor or heart. A female weightlifter and a male swimmer find each other. Genuinely joyful to watch.

But The romantic conflict relies partly on misunderstanding and withholding. Some might find the sports subplot distracting from the romance.

What's Wrong with Secretary Kim2018

Park Seo Joon at his charming, arrogant best as a boss falling for his perfect secretary who's about to leave him. The comedy is sharp, the chemistry is electric, and it knows exactly what it is.

But The power dynamic (boss-secretary) might feel uncomfortable. Lighter on dramatic stakes than it initially promises.

Something you would not have found on your own.

A Fool and His Money1989

Both explore the same core shame (ugly becomes beautiful, poor becomes rich) but from opposite directions: She Was Pretty wants the lie to crumble so love can be real; this film asks what we lose by lying in the first place.

A devastatingly accurate South Korean film about image, class anxiety, and how we perform for the people we want to impress. The 'ugly girl hiding her identity' exists here 35 years earlier, but with tragic realism instead of rom-com mechanics.

But Made in 1988 with minimal distribution. Black and white or poor transfer quality depending on source. Zero lightness—it's about the cost of pretending to be someone you're not.

My Love from the Star2013

A time-traveling alien and a washed-up actress. Absurd premise executed with such confidence and warmth that you'll forget to question it. Beautifully funny and genuinely romantic.

But The sci-fi elements serve the romance, not the other way around—if you want real world-building, this isn't it. Some plots feel padded.

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon2017

A woman with superhuman strength, a billionaire tech CEO, and a pitch-perfect balance of action, comedy, and genuine tenderness. Smart, confident characters who communicate. Rare and wonderful.

But The crime subplot doesn't integrate smoothly with the romance. Occasional tonal whiplash between silly and serious.

Crash Landing on You2019

A South Korean heiress literally crash-lands in North Korea and falls for an army officer protecting her. High-stakes premise, enormous chemistry, genuinely one of the best rom-coms of the last decade.

But Extremely popular, so you'll feel the hype. The North Korea setting means some awkwardness around real geopolitics that the show doesn't always handle with nuance.

The Heirs2013

Gorgeous, ridiculous, utterly confident in its own melodrama. Lee Min Ho and Park Shin Hye as rich kids in crisis. If you want pure escapism and didn't mind Boys Over Flowers, this scratches the same itch.

But The plot is genuinely thin. Wealthy high school drama might feel hollow if you want substance to go with your romance.

Her Private Life2019

A woman hiding her fangirl obsession falls for a gallery director. Playful, modern, generous with comedy. The female lead has real agency and quirks, which is refreshing.

But The fandom subplot dominates more than some will enjoy. Shorter series (12 episodes) means less time to settle into the world.

Moonlight2016

Both movies are about identity shifting based on who's looking—but where She Was Pretty plays it for romantic comedy, Moonlight uses the same structure to examine masculinity, desire, and the self. Both argue that we exist partly in other people's eyes, but Moonlight refuses easy answers.

A young man across three time periods, each with a man who sees him differently—as a problem, as beautiful, as himself. Transcendently intimate, visually spare, about how we become ourselves through how others see us. Different genre, same architecture.

But Slow, poetic, little dialogue. American indie, not K-drama. The emotional content is grief and longing, not comedic romance. Requires active attention; deeply resistant to distraction.
