Television series
Midnight, Texas
A supernatural ensemble drama set in a remote Texas town populated by witches, vampires, psychics and other outcasts who've found refuge from the outside world. It's warm and character-driven rather than gore-heavy, balancing mystery and danger with genuine found-family affection. For fans of paranormal procedurals who want heart alongside the strangeness.

True Blood2008
Charlaine Harris created both, and True Blood shares the same blend of Southern Gothic atmosphere, ensemble cast dynamics, and supernatural romance with real stakes. The DNA is identical.
But True Blood's later seasons lost focus badly, and it's considerably more graphic and sexually explicit than Midnight, Texas.

The Vampire Diaries2009
An ensemble supernatural drama where a small town becomes a nexus for paranormal activity and the locals must band together to survive. Teenagers and young adults navigating love, loss, and impossible situations.
But It's aimed at a younger demographic and leans heavily into romantic triangles that can overshadow the plot for long stretches.

The Witcher2019
Monster-hunting stories with a ensemble cast of misfits and outsiders. Complex morality, atmospheric world-building, and characters defined by what makes them different rather than despite it.
But It's dense and mythologically complicated, requiring patience with its narrative structure and multiple timelines in early seasons.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Owl House2020
Both centre on communities of magical outsiders building family bonds in isolated places; both prioritise character warmth alongside genuine danger.
A young human finds herself in a magical realm and must navigate it with help from a found family of witches and demons. It's funny, surprisingly emotional, and genuinely explores what it means to be an outsider. Animation allows visual creativity network TV can't match.
But It's animated and on Disney+, so some may expect it to be lighter than it actually is; it also has queer relationships that certain viewers might resist.

Grimm2011
A procedural where a detective discovers supernatural creatures hiding in plain sight in his city. Each week brings new paranormal cases while an overarching mythology deepens. Accessible and fun.
But The case-of-the-week format can feel repetitive, and the mythology takes a while to become compelling.

The Magicians2015
An ensemble of flawed, complicated characters thrust into a magical world where they must rely on each other. Balances dark themes with moments of genuine warmth and dark humour.
But It's deliberately chaotic and often bleak, with tonal shifts that don't always land, and sexual content that some find gratuitous.

Carnivàle2003
A richly atmospheric supernatural drama with an ensemble cast during the Great Depression. Mysterious, gorgeous cinematography, and a sense that something larger is being unveiled.
But It was cancelled on a cliffhanger after two seasons, so you won't get closure, and the pacing is deliberately slow.

Penny Dreadful2014
A Victorian supernatural ensemble where damaged people with supernatural abilities band together. Beautifully shot, literary in its approach, with genuine stakes and character depth.
But The second season falters, and it can be gruelling in its violence and despair, sometimes prioritising atmosphere over plot momentum.

Supernatural2005
Two brothers hunt monsters across America. It's gone on long enough to find its rhythm, and the monster-of-the-week episodes are often creative and entertaining.
But Fifteen seasons is a commitment, and quality varies wildly; the earlier seasons are strongest, and later ones can feel like fan service.

Angel1999
A supernatural ensemble procedural set in Los Angeles where a vampire with a soul leads a team fighting paranormal threats. Mix of mythology, case work, and character development.
But It's very much of its time visually, and some episodes prioritise 90s television aesthetics over genuine scares or drama.

Rectify2013
Both are ensemble pieces set in small Southern towns where damaged people find refuge and tentative family; both value character over spectacle.
A man released from death row after 20 years tries to rebuild his life in his small Georgia hometown. It's a meditation on trauma, redemption, and belonging. Achingly human and visually poetic.
But There's no supernatural element—it's grounded psychological drama that moves slowly and requires emotional patience rather than plot urgency.

Pushing Daisies2007
Both feature ensemble casts of strange people in small communities solving mysteries together; both pair supernatural elements with genuine emotional stakes and found-family themes.
A pie-maker discovers he can revive dead things with a touch, then uses this power to solve murders with his love interest and two other misfits. It's visually gorgeous, deeply weird, and genuinely moving beneath the whimsy.
But It's extremely stylized and whimsical—the constant deadpan narration and candy-coloured palette won't appeal to those wanting grounded storytelling.
