Television series
Dead Boy Detectives
Two dead teenagers run a supernatural detective agency out of an abandoned house, solving paranormal mysteries for ghosts and the desperate. It's *Scooby-Doo* meets *The Twilight Zone* with genuine warmth, dark humour, and a real emotional core beneath the monsters. Charming, clever, and unafraid to break your heart.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy cheeky ghost-buddy banter wrapped around spooky case-of-the-week mysteries, with a soft melancholy running underneath the jokes, and you like your horror light on its feet rather than gory.
Skip it if you want a tidy whodunit with fair clues to chase, since the cases here often serve the friendship and the ghost-world mythology instead.
What it asks of you: Eight episodes of under an hour each, so it moves briskly and slides by in an evening, with a playful pace that keeps its darker moments brief.

The Sandman2022
Neil Gaiman's original, infinitely richer universe where this show lives. Beautiful, literary, darkly witty—the definitive adaptation of his most ambitious work. A masterclass in tone.
But Ten episodes of mythology and dream logic can feel dense. Requires patience with slow-burn storytelling and visual poetry over plot momentum.

Supernatural2005
Two guys with genuine chemistry hunt monsters across America for fifteen seasons. It nails the balance of genuine scares, camp humour, and unexpected emotional depth that makes Dead Boy work.
But At its best in seasons two through five; later seasons feel creaky and repetitive. Enormous time commitment with inconsistent quality throughout.

Midnight Mass2021
Mike Flanagan's haunted small town miniseries. Brilliant atmosphere, stellar cast, and the patience to let dread build. Treats horror with real weight while letting characters breathe.
But Deliberately paced and meditative; not much happens in episode two. Religious themes dominate. Bleaker than Dead Boy's tone.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters2013
Both make horror fun rather than frightening. Dead Boy's comedy comes from character warmth; this comes from embracing the trashy B-movie joy of its own premise. Same permission to be unserious about darkness.
Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as adult versions of the fairy tale, now professional witch killers. Absurdly fun, gorgeously grotesque production design, completely committed to its ridiculous premise. Pure entertainment.
But Aggressively silly with anachronistic humour. Violence is cartoonish but constant. Absolutely no pretension to substance whatsoever.

What We Do in the Shadows2014
Mockumentary about vampires trying to survive in modern New Zealand. Perfect tonal cousin—absurd and deeply funny while genuinely caring about its characters. Deceptively smart.
But Some jokes land harder than others and the humour skews very dry. Not always supernatural, sometimes just awkwardly indie.

Pushing Daisies2007
A pie-maker whose touch resurrects dead things solves murders. Whimsical, clever, gorgeously designed. Same DNA as Dead Boy—cosy mystery wrapped around magical sadness.
But Saccharine for some viewers. The twee aesthetic can wear thin and the show's cancellation means no real ending.

The Owl House2020
A human girl ends up in a demon realm learning witchcraft. Genuinely warm found-family story with excellent character work and real stakes. Proves animated supernatural shows can have depth.
But Aimed at younger audiences so some emotional beats feel simplified. Mixed animation quality between seasons.

Constantine2014
Keanu Reeves as a cynical demon-hunter in this adaptation of the comics. Dark, atmospheric, takes its occult mythology seriously. One season but densely packed.
But Cancelled after ten episodes. Feels incomplete and the tone is grimmer, more serious than Dead Boy's warmth allows.

Nancy Drew2019
Modern teen detective mystery with supernatural undertones and genuine character complexity. Strong ensemble, good pacing, the mystery actually matters. CW's best recent show.
But Leans heavily into teen drama mechanics. Some plot twists feel contrived and it got progressively weirder as it continued.

The X-Files1993
Two agents investigate the paranormal for the FBI. Genuinely creepy, perfectly paced episodes, and Mulder and Scully's dynamic defined how partners work on screen. Still holds up.
But Nine seasons of uneven quality; early episodes are the best. Mythology arc becomes impenetrable. Dated TV procedural rhythms.

Lovely Molly2011
Both centre on ghosts tied to unresolved trauma and unfinished relationships. Where Dead Boy offers investigation and resolution, Molly offers only descent. Same haunting question: what do the dead owe the living?
Found-footage horror about a newlywed haunted by her past. Quiet, genuinely unsettling, uses restraint brilliantly. Eddie Vedder's score is haunting. A ghost story that earns its dread.
But Shot on handheld camera—motion sickness territory for some. Bleak ending and no comfort offered. Slow-burn to the point of testing patience.

Russian Doll2019
Both understand that humour and horror aren't opposites. Both use the supernatural to explore loneliness and the desperate human need to matter to someone. Same belief that funny can be profound.
Natasha Lyonne in a darkly funny time-loop story about addiction, death, and being stuck. Season two pivots to Russia in the 1980s. Surreal, heartbreaking, endlessly inventive. Comedy and genuine darkness in perfect proportion.
But Fragmented narrative that doesn't always cohere. Darker and more adult than Dead Boy. Second season's tonal shift alienates some viewers.
