Television series
Darling in the FranXX
A visually stunning anime about teenagers piloting giant robots to defend their isolated dome city from mysterious creatures. It's part mecha action, part coming-of-age story, with a romantic throughline that becomes increasingly central. Sweeping, dramatic, occasionally heavy-handed about identity and belonging—made for people who love both spectacle and emotional investment.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love mecha shows where the robots matter less than the awkward, sharp-tongued bond between two misfit teenagers, and you don't mind a sincere, earnest tone.
Skip it if you find teenage crushes and flirty banter a chore, since its early episodes lean hard on romance before the monster fights carry real weight.
What it asks of you: It asks for patience across a full 24 half-hour episodes, with slow setup and character talk that pays off only if you stay with it.

Neon Genesis Evangelion1995
The spiritual ancestor of this show: teenagers in giant robots, existential dread, an increasingly unhinged narrative that questions whether the pilots are tools or people. Evangelion goes places Darling doesn't dare.
But It's deliberately difficult and oppressive. The final two episodes are experimental and frustrating. Watching it feels like homework sometimes.

Kill la Kill2013
Same studio (Trigger), same commitment to wild visual energy and emotional chaos. A girl with mysterious origins and a strange outfit fights an oppressive system. It's trashy, fun, and weirdly moving about found family.
But Aggressively crude humor and fanservice that some will find distracting rather than charming. The plot gets messy in the back half.

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann2007
Mecha robots, kids discovering freedom outside their enclosed world, a romance that matters, and a story that escalates to genuinely mythic scale. Unashamed earnestness about belief and willpower.
But The tonal shifts from comedy to apocalyptic can feel jarring. Some find the earnestness itself exhausting rather than moving.

Carole & Tuesday2019
Two girls against an oppressive system, also from Bones studio. Less action-heavy but similar DNA: isolation, yearning, the power of connection. A story about art and resistance that trusts its emotional core.
But Slower pacing. If you're here for robot fights, you'll be disappointed. The romance is secondary and understated.

Little Witch Academia2017
Trigger again, but gentler: kids in a rigid system discovering magic and friendship. Gorgeous animation, genuine affection for its characters, and a similar found-family structure.
But Very much a kids' show in tone and themes. Almost aggressively wholesome; no real stakes or darkness.

Ergo Proxy2006
Post-apocalyptic world, isolated dome city, mysterious girl, philosophical underpinning. Moodier and more introspective than Darling, with real visual style and a stranger romance.
But Deliberately paced and cryptic. If you want answers and clarity, this will frustrate you. Some episodes feel more like mood pieces than plot.

Akira1988
The foundational cyberpunk anime: isolated young people with strange powers, government conspiracy, a decaying future city. Visually revolutionary and thematically dense about power and corruption.
But It's a dense, difficult film. The plot threads don't wrap neatly. You'll need to pay close attention or accept some confusion.

Kakumeiki Valvrave2013
Messy, sincere mecha show about teenagers in a hidden school who pilot robots and fall in love. Chaotic but committed to its emotional melodrama. Great if you like Darling's soap-opera energy.
But The plot is genuinely incoherent at times. The show bites off more than it can chew and leaves contradictions unresolved.

Sidonia no Kishi2014
Isolated dome ship, teenagers piloting mechas to survive, a romance between a human and something other. Thoughtful sci-fi with real stakes and character development.
But CGI animation that looks dated now. Slower-burn pacing. The worldbuilding sometimes overwhelms character moments.
