Television series
Sidonia no Kishi
A thousand years after aliens destroyed Earth, humanity survives aboard the generation ship Sidonia. When the monstrous Gauna return after a century of silence, a sheltered young man emerges from hiding to pilot combat robots and fight for humanity's survival. It's hard sci-fi worldbuilding with philosophical weight, gorgeous CG animation, and genuine stakes. For those who want their space opera thoughtful and strange.
If you liked this
Attack on Titan2013
Humanity trapped in fortified spaces fighting incomprehensible monsters. Both build escalating dread through mystery, strong ensemble casts, and the realization that survival means sacrifice. Equally gripping.
But Much more violent and graphically brutal. If Sidonia's restraint appeals to you, Titan's relentless gore might exhaust rather than thrill.

Mobile Suit Gundam1979
The foundational mecha anime: war in space, young pilots forced into combat, political intrigue threatening unity, beautiful mechanical design. Sidonia owes it everything. The DNA is unmistakable.
But Forty-three episodes and pacing from 1979. Some find the original deliberately slow. Commitment required.

Neon Genesis Evangelion1995
Teenage pilots, mysterious aliens, existential dread, and a premise that unravels into philosophy. Both treat giant robots as vessels for exploring what it means to survive and belong when everything is alien.
But Evangelion gets abstract and psychologically brutal in ways that some find pretentious or punishing. Sidonia is clearer-headed.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Planetes2003
Both treat space as a graveyard where survival is about engineering, not heroics. Both ask what it means to live when everything around you is dead or trying to kill you.
Also a quiet, thoughtful anime about small crews in space facing extinction. Focuses on debris collectors rather than warriors—same stakes, different perspective. Shares Sidonia's hard sci-fi logic and willingness to let silence speak.
But Almost deliberately slow and meditative. Minimal action, maximum conversation. If you want Sidonia's spectacle, this offers none.

Battle of the Planets1978
Early space adventure anime with similar DNA: small team of pilots defending Earth from extraterrestrials, vibrant worldbuilding, weekly battles that matter. Pure fun and surprisingly elegant.
But Creature-of-the-week structure can feel repetitive. Less narrative ambition than Sidonia, more episodic padding.

Seveneves
Hard sci-fi about humanity's last stand after catastrophe. Cold, technical, focused on survival logistics and the moral weight of impossible choices. Shares Sidonia's willingness to think through the consequences.
But Dense, cerebral, without much warmth or character development. Some find it sterile. No action sequences to break up the thinking.
The Expanse2015
Generation ships, political factions, alien threats, and humanity spread across space learning it's not alone. Grounded sci-fi with genuine consequences and a cast that grows on you.
But Slow to find its footing in season one. Much longer commitment—and was cancelled twice, so completion feels uncertain.

Macross1982
Mecha, aliens, doomed love, and the strange idea that culture might save humanity as much as weapons. Influential, visually rich, emotionally generous. Sidonia learned from this.
But Tone wildly shifts between romance and war drama. Some find the tonal whiplash charming; others find it incoherent.

Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch2006
Brilliant, scheming protagonist with a hidden power; high-stakes mecha combat; a world that doesn't play fair. Addictive plotting and genuine surprises. Moves fast and commits to consequences.
But Melodramatic and increasingly absurd. If you want restraint and realism, this will feel like soap opera with robots.

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann2007
Humans fighting overwhelming alien forces, escalating scale and stakes, animation that explodes with energy. Pure adrenaline and heart. A masterclass in building momentum and earning its emotional beats.
But Relentlessly bombastic and sincere. If that earnestness exhausts you, or if you prefer cool detachment, this will feel exhausting.

3 Body Problem2024
Both begin from the premise that aliens are not misunderstood but genuinely incomprehensible. Both ask whether humanity can evolve fast enough to survive contact with something truly alien.
A miniseries grounded in hard sci-fi: first contact with an alien civilization that thinks at cosmic scales. Strange, ambitious, intellectually unsettling. The Chinese production takes the concept seriously in ways American TV rarely does.
But Very dry. Structured like a physics lecture. Long sequences of characters explaining problems with no clear resolution. Patience required, urgency withheld.

Blame2018
Both use lavish CG animation to show humanity as small, engineered creatures surviving in incomprehensibly vast structures. Both love showing scale by making people tiny.
A feature-length CG anime following a wanderer through a decaying megastructure hunted by automated defenses. Gorgeous, nightmarish, philosophically strange. Built on similar visual language to Sidonia but far more visual and less talky.
But Thin plot, minimal dialogue, deliberately obscure mythology. You're watching it for atmosphere and animation, not story clarity. Some find it beautiful, others pretentious emptiness.
