Conspiracy thriller
The protagonist usually starts out sure of one small thing, a photograph, a phone call, a file that doesn't add up, and then discovers the thing is only the loose thread of something enormous. These stories thrive on the slow, creeping realisation that the people in charge are lying to you, and that the lie is well organised. You finish them checking the locks and doubting the evening news a little.
