Same true-story bones as Thirteen — a real teenage girl's descent, co-opted into a film that shocked adults into paying attention — just set in Cold War Berlin instead of suburban LA, and with a needle instead of a nose ring.

Two decades before Thirteen, this German film — based on the real diary of a teenage heroin addict — did the exact same thing: a good kid, a magnetic bad influence, and a fall no adult sees coming until it's too late.

But Subtitled, grainier, and considerably harder-edged; the heroin content is far more clinical and devastating than anything in Thirteen.

Girl, Interrupted1999

The intense, codependent friendship at the centre — one girl pulling another toward chaos — is basically Tracy and Evie relocated to a psychiatric ward, with Angelina Jolie in career-making mode.

But Institutional setting gives it a different, more contained rhythm than Thirteen's loose, spiralling home life.

Sasha Lane's runaway teen finds the same intoxicating, dangerous freedom Tracy chases with Evie, just stretched across a road trip instead of a bedroom — restless, sun-bleached, and morally loose.

But Nearly three hours long and meandering by design; it asks for patience Thirteen never does.

But Tonally uneven, and the comedy sometimes undercuts the stakes Thirteen takes so seriously.

Flip the lens to the mother and you get this: Charlize Theron unraveling under the weight of parenting, a quieter companion piece to Melanie's exhausted, helpless love for Tracy.

But It's about early motherhood, not adolescence, so the overlap is thematic rather than direct — a mother's-eye epilogue, not a sequel.

Both are about a girl's body and identity being hijacked by forces she can't control, with a sister/best-friend relationship curdling under the strain — Thirteen just tells it straight where Ginger Snaps tells it as monster movie.

A Canadian horror-comedy where a teenage girl's first period coincides with a werewolf bite, turning puberty itself into body horror — the same loss-of-control terror Thirteen dramatizes, just with claws and a body count.

But It's a genre movie first — gorier, funnier, more openly metaphorical — so anyone wanting straight realism will find the werewolf angle a hard swerve.

My So-Called Life1994

Same premise — an ordinary girl reshaping her whole identity around a new, more electric friend — but the register flips entirely: hopeful and patient where Thirteen is feral and doomed, a reminder the story doesn't have to end in freefall.

A 90s teen drama that asks the same question Thirteen does — what happens when a good girl starts chasing a cooler, more dangerous version of herself — but answers it with tenderness instead of dread.

But Only one season exists, and its earnest, slower rhythms will feel almost quaint next to Thirteen's frantic pace.
