Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare

A documentary following a woman's years-long online relationship with someone who turns out to be living a complete fabrication. It's a methodical, sometimes darkly funny dissection of how easily we can be fooled by someone we've never met, and how hard it is to leave when you've already invested so much of yourself in the story they've told.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like documentaries that let real people narrate their own bewildering story, and you don't mind reenactments stitching the gaps together.

Skip it if you want a rigorous investigation rather than a personal account; this stays close to one woman's experience, and its reenactments can feel staged.

What it asks of you: Under ninety minutes at a steady clip, it wants you to sit through uncomfortable emotional fallout and to keep track of which faces are real and which are actors.

The Tinder Swindler2022

Another recent doc about a charming deceiver who built an entire fake persona to manipulate people. It has a similar arc—revelation, disbelief, then dawning horror—and the same queasy question: how did this work?

But The subject is less sympathetic than in Sweet Bobby, and some viewers find the tone a bit too satisfied with the con artist's audacity.

Catfish2010

The original film that made 'catfishing' a term. It's shorter, quieter, and more uncertain than you might expect—the filmmakers genuinely don't know what they'll find when they meet the woman their friend has been talking to online.

But It moves slowly and witholds information deliberately, which some viewers find frustrating rather than suspenseful.

The Woman in the Window2021

A doc about a woman who becomes obsessed with a stranger's life after seeing her through a window. Like Sweet Bobby, it's about how isolation and longing can warp our perception of reality, and how we project onto unknowable people.

But It's more meditative and less about deception than suspense, so the 'aha' moment is quieter.

Beware the Slenderman2016

Both show how an invented online persona can completely colonize someone's inner world and override their judgment—but this one traces what happens when that colonization leads to action in the real world.

A doc about two teenage girls who stabbed a friend, claiming Slenderman made them do it. It's not about romance, but it *is* about how a fictional person created online can become so real to someone that they reshape their entire reality and behavior around it. Same psychological earthquake, different outcome.

But It deals with extreme violence and mental illness, and the philosophical questions it raises are darker and more uncomfortable than Sweet Bobby's.

Fyre2019

Billy McFarland built an entire false world to convince people something real was happening. It's a masterclass in manipulation and the psychology of believing what you want to believe, told with dark humour.

But The scale is huge and the con is absurd, which can feel distant from the intimate deception in Sweet Bobby.

Abducted in Plain Sight2017

A mind-bending true story about a family completely manipulated by a man over many years. It shows how grooming works on a family level, and how shame and confusion can keep victims quiet.

But Some viewers find the family's repeated choices baffling rather than sympathetic, and the doc can feel exploitative in its disbelief.

The Two Popes2019

If you want to sit with the question of how we know what's true about someone we've never fully understood, this film asks it quietly. It's about intimacy and deception between two men who think they understand each other.

But It's fictional, so the satisfaction is philosophical rather than journalistic. Some find it slow and talk-heavy.

Our Father2022

A doc about a fertility doctor who deceived his patients for decades. It's methodical and shocking, building a picture of how one person's lies can ripple through hundreds of lives.

But The subject matter is deeply disturbing and some viewers find the pacing too relentless to sit through.

Becoming2020

Both are about identity and performance online and off, but this one celebrates the deliberateness of it rather than revealing it as a con.

Michelle Obama's documentary, but what makes it relevant here is how it traces the construction of public identity and the gap between the person you present and the person you are. It's a mirror image: what happens when someone tells the truth about their careful self-presentation.

But It's a memoir doc, not a thriller. If you're coming for deception and betrayal, you'll get introspection instead.
