But The action set-pieces are bigger and bloodier than Congeniality ever gets, which can jar against the comedy.

Both films are about a rough young woman handed a crash course in glamour and etiquette by an older mentor and reshaped into an asset for an institution — Nikita's version is the same idea stripped of every joke.

Luc Besson's original assassin thriller follows a feral young woman remade by a shadowy agency into an elegant killer, all cold style and real menace — the makeover-into-weapon idea taken deadly seriously.

But It's bleak, French, and largely humorless — anyone hoping for even a flicker of Congeniality's warmth will find none here.

21 Jump Street2012

Swap the pageant for high school and the FBI agent for two cops, and you've got the same undercover-misfit engine, souped up with raunchier jokes and a genuinely clever satire of teen movies.

But It's a much rowdier, R-rated comedy — Congeniality's PG-13 sweetness is nowhere in sight.
