Big Momma's House 2
- Comedy
- Light-hearted
A comedy heist film where FBI agent Malcolm Turner disguises himself as a loud, athletic grandmother to infiltrate a wealthy household and investigate a computer hacker. It's silly, fast-paced, and built entirely on Martin Lawrence's commitment to the bit. For viewers who want lowbrow fun without apology and don't mind watching a grown man in a dress outsmart criminals.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love broad, physical farce built around one performer's disguise and the comic friction of a grown man running a household as a granny.
Skip it if you find cross-dressing gags wear thin fast, or you want a crime plot with real tension, since the spy story is mostly a frame for the jokes.
What it asks of you: It runs a brisk hour and a half, mostly as a sequence of set-pieces, so you can switch off and let the slapstick roll without tracking a complicated plot.

Rush Hour 22001
Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker reprise their chemistry in an action-comedy about an FBI agent and a Hong Kong cop taking down drug lords in LA. Equally interested in laughs and stunts, with genuine warmth between its leads.
But The plot is thin and exists mostly to connect set pieces. Some of the comedy relies on stereotypes that haven't aged gracefully.

White Chicks2004
Two undercover cops go undercover as glamorous socialites to catch jewel thieves. Peak Wayans brothers chaos: absurdist, confident in the bit, and genuinely inventive in how far it pushes the premise.
But The humour is built on exaggeration and drag performance, which either lands for you or doesn't. The plot is negligible.

Miss Congeniality2000
An undercover FBI agent poses as a beauty pageant contestant to prevent an assassination. Sandra Bullock leans into the comedy, Michael Caine is charming, and the film balances action and silly jokes without taking itself seriously.
But The climax hinges on "she's pretty now!" as a punchline. It's very much a product of 2000 in how it thinks about women's bodies.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Norbit2007
Both are performances built on cross-dressing and character work, where the star's commitment to the bit is the entire point. Both films lean hard into what audiences came for and don't apologize.
Eddie Murphy plays three characters across a story of mistaken identity and gangster comedy. It's deeply earnest about its own absurdity and commits fully to the bit in a way that's almost admirable.
But The humour is broad and often feels mean-spirited. Many find it bewildering rather than funny, and the plot has real issues. It's widely considered one of Murphy's worst films.

The Beverly Hillbillies1993
Poor oil barons move to Hollywood. Silly, sweet, and utterly committed to broad comedy. Jim Varney steals scenes, and there's genuine charm beneath the jokes.
But It's about as subtle as a brick and relies heavily on fish-out-of-water gags that repeat. Doesn't appeal to anyone looking for wit.

Tropic Thunder2008
Method acting goes haywire when a war movie crew gets stranded in actual danger. Robert Downey Jr. steals it as a ridiculous actor. Sharply satirical while being genuinely funny and occasionally thrilling.
But The satire sometimes comes at the expense of its own characters' dignity. Some jokes land poorly and don't age well.

Madea's Family Reunion2006
Tyler Perry plays a no-nonsense grandmother solving her family's drama with brutal wisdom and comedy. Perry's Madea has comic timing and an infectious energy, and the film finds real heart in the family chaos.
But Perry directs himself, and the film indulges in melodrama alongside the laughs. Very much a Tyler Perry film, which narrows the audience.

National Security2003
Martin Lawrence and Steve Martin are mismatched cops on the run from terrorists. Lawrence is energetic and funny, and there's an easy chemistry between him and Martin that carries the lighter moments.
But The plot barely coheres and action sequences feel perfunctory. It's a vehicle coasting on its star's charm rather than craft.

Undercover Brother2002
A blaxploitation-inspired spy comedy about a man fighting a secret organization that's suppressing Black culture. Eddy Murphy produces and the cast is game. Fun, absurd, and unpretentious.
But The humour is uneven and some jokes miss badly. The satire isn't precise enough to land consistently.

Nutty Professor II: The Klumps2000
Eddie Murphy plays multiple members of a chaotic family. He's clearly having fun, the family dynamics are surprisingly warm, and there are stretches of genuine laughs among the silliness.
But It's messier and more juvenile than the first film, and the plot is secondary to watching Murphy perform. Not for anyone tired of his particular brand of comedy.

The Ladykillers2004
Both films hinge on a protagonist hiding in plain sight within a household, maintaining a false identity while carrying out an operation. Both mix crime with disguise-based comedy.
Tom Hanks and a crew of criminals disguise themselves as gospel musicians to rob a bank from a small-town landlady's house. Coen Brothers direction, clever premise, and Marlon Wayans bouncing off a bemused Hanks.
But It's a Coen Brothers remake of a British film, and it can feel airless and overstuffed. The comedy is often mean-spirited toward the elderly landlady character.

Coming 2 America2021
Both are comedy sequels more than a decade after the original, relying on a star's performance and character work rather than plot substance. Both bet everything on charm and established chemistry.
Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall return to the roles that made them stars, bringing genuine affection for the 1988 original. It's nostalgia done right—warm, self-aware, and actually funny in stretches. Murphy hasn't felt this comfortable in years.
But The film is bloated and loses focus halfway through. It assumes you loved the original and offers little for newcomers. Some celebrity cameos feel desperate.
