Heropanti
Heropanti is a Bollywood action-romance that pairs a street fighter with a wealthy girl against a backdrop of industrial violence and family conflict. It's stylish and energetic, with elaborate action sequences and elaborate musical numbers. For viewers who want their romance wrapped in spectacular stunts and Hindi cinema grandeur.
If you liked this
Dhoom2004
Explosive heist action with genuine chemistry between leads, glamorous international locations, and Bollywood spectacle at its most confident. A template for thrilling entertainment that delivers on every level.
But The plot is straightforward to the point of simplicity, and the pacing occasionally favours style over coherence.

Commando - A One Man Army2013
Raw, relentless action cinema from Vidyut Jammwal that doesn't apologise for being exactly what it is. Brutal fight choreography and genuine stunt work that feels urgent and inventive.
But The dialogue is functional rather than clever, and the romantic subplot exists mainly because Bollywood expects it.

Death Race2008
Twisty crime-thriller with real stakes, beautiful cinematography across multiple continents, and a cast playing at the top of their game. Engaging from first frame to last.
But The second act sags slightly, and some plot turns rely on convenience rather than character logic.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Ong-Bak2003
Both are built on a lead actor's physical prowess and street-level energy. Heropanti borrows Ong Bak's grammar of action cinema but softens it with Bollywood emotion.
Thai action cinema that inspired Heropanti's physicality but goes further: real stunts, real danger, real pain. Tony Jaa performs action that looks like nothing else on screen. Hypnotic and absolutely vital.
But The plot is genuinely thin, the acting is functional, and it prioritises spectacle over story to a degree that tests patience.

Ek Tha Tiger2012
Clever spy-thriller that balances action, romance, and genuine humour without sacrificing any of them. Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan have electric chemistry, and the action sequences are inventive.
But The geopolitical stakes are somewhat cartoonish, and the climax asks you to accept a few too many coincidences.

Badlapur2015
Slow-burn revenge thriller with real moral complexity and quiet intensity. Varun Dhawan delivers a career-best performance as a man consumed by his own vendetta.
But It's deliberately paced and bleak throughout. There's no cathartic release, which some viewers find frustrating rather than powerful.

The Raid 22014
Indonesian action masterpiece with fight choreography that redefines what cinema can do with the human body. Criminally thrilling and visually inventive from start to finish.
But It's relentlessly brutal and doesn't pause for emotional breath. The plot is secondary to the action, which won't work for everyone.

Singham2011
Ajay Devgn as an unstoppable cop pursuing justice through sheer force of will. Gloriously over-the-top action and a lead performance brimming with charisma.
But The action frequently defies physics or logic, and the film doesn't pretend to offer anything but spectacle.

Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani2002
Cult action-romance that swings for the fences. A genuine time capsule of Hindi cinema's more ambitious, slightly unhinged moments.
But The pacing is chaotic, the logic questionable, and it hasn't aged gracefully. Best approached with affection rather than expecting coherence.

Rang De Basanti2006
Both centre on young people navigating violence (systemic vs. personal) and asking what love means when everything around you is broken. Heropanti handles it as action-romance; this one insists on the stakes.
Political awakening wrapped as a love story. Aamir Khan leads a ensemble cast through something that starts as a film-within-a-film and becomes genuinely moving. Urgent, funny, and angry in ways Heropanti only hints at.
But It wears its heart very much on its sleeve and becomes preachy in the second half. Some find it manipulative rather than inspiring.

In the Realm of the Senses1976
The deepest connection: both centre on a romance that exists outside social bounds, where the couple's connection is absolute but ultimately doomed by the world around them. One is a musical action film; this is unsparing tragedy. They're inverses.
Nagisa Oshima's transgressive masterpiece about passion consuming everything else. Shot with technical brilliance and uncompromising honesty. A film that redefined what cinema could say about desire.
But It contains explicit sexual content and a genuinely upsetting ending. Approaching it requires intellectual and emotional preparation.
