Ohm Shanthi Oshaana

A Malayalam romantic comedy about a determined young woman chasing the man she believes saved her, only to discover that life has other plans. Warm, funny, and genuinely touching, it finds humour in family chaos and the gap between who we think we want and who we actually need. For anyone who loves a story where the pursuit matters more than the prize.

Bangalore Days2014

Three friends navigate love, ambition, and friendship across cities with the same Malayalam charm and ensemble warmth. Funny without trying too hard, with real tenderness underneath the rom-com scaffolding.

But Plotwise it's familiar—friends, romance, life lessons—and if you've seen one modern Indian romance, the beats feel recognizable. Pacing occasionally meanders.

Charlie2015

A Malayalam romance that prizes conversation and chemistry over plot. Two people discovering each other in real time, with wit and vulnerability that makes you believe in the connection. Beautifully shot, too.

But Almost nothing happens. If you need external conflict or a ticking clock, this will feel like waiting in a coffee shop. Very deliberately paced.

Premam2015

A Malayalam film that's equal parts romance, nostalgia, and comedy—three different love stories across three eras in one man's life. Smart, funny, genuinely moving. The kind of film that sticks with you for unexpected reasons.

But Shifts tone quite a bit between segments; some viewers find the tonal whiplash jarring. The final act is considerably more serious than the beginning.

Insomnia2015

Nazriya Nazim in the lead role, but doing the exact inverse of her Ohm Shanthi character—here she's the object of menace, not affection.

A thriller about a woman haunted by a man from her past—same lead as Ohm Shanthi Oshaana, but playing someone pursued rather than pursuing, and the film itself is dark, tense, and entirely different in register. Shows a different side of Malayalam cinema and a different side of the actor.

But It's a psychological thriller, not a romance or comedy. If you want warmth and humour, this is cold and unsettling. Significantly darker than expected.

Cocktail2012

Hindi romance about two people who seem wrong for each other, slowly discovering they might be exactly right. Sharp dialogue, palpable chemistry, and a willingness to let characters be complicated and selfish.

But Relies on some dated attitudes toward women and relationships that haven't aged well. The second half undoes some of the sharpness the first half earned.

Happy Bhag Jayegi2016

A woman flees her wedding and ends up in Pakistan by accident; chaos and romance ensue. Funny without condescension, genuinely touching, and surprisingly political about borders and belonging without hectoring.

But The romance arrives quickly and somewhat conveniently. If you need a slow burn or real obstacles, the obstacles here dissolve too fast.

Jaanu2020

Two exes reconnect after years apart. Understated, melancholic, and gorgeously shot. A film about the specific ache of loving someone you can't be with, told with real restraint and maturity.

But If you want closure or a neat ending, this isn't it. The emotional territory is smaller than you might expect—grief rather than drama. Very slow.

Heropanti2014

A young man returns to his hometown to win back his childhood love, but his impulsive nature keeps derailing him. Energetic, funny, with genuine sweetness underneath the chaos. Pure fun with a good heart.

But Plot is tissue-thin and mostly an excuse for action and comedy. If you need substance, this won't provide it. The romance feels secondary to the spectacle.

Drishyam2013

Same era and film industry as Ohm Shanthi Oshaana, but Malayalam cinema at its most serious and morally complicated—a different face of the same regional cinema.

A Malayalam thriller about a man protecting his family after a terrible accident. Crime fiction instead of romance, but with the same emotional intelligence about family bonds and the lengths we go for people we love. Brilliantly constructed, genuinely suspenseful.

But It's a serious thriller with real consequences and darkness. If you want lightness and romance, this is the opposite. Also, Malayalam cinema's genre range will surprise you if you've only seen the comedies.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge1995

The spiritual ancestor of Ohm Shanthi Oshaana's plot engine (man pursues woman, eventually wins her through charm and determination), made in a different era to show how that story has evolved and what it used to mean.

The template that shaped every Indian romance you've watched since: a man pursues a woman across continents with charm and persistence. If you loved Ohm Shanthi Oshaana's central romance, this is where that DNA comes from. Impossibly rewatchable, genuinely romantic without cynicism.

But It's 1995 and it shows—the gender politics are from another era, and the film doesn't seem to notice. Very long. The idealization of male pursuit feels dated.
