Film
Gunsmith Cats
A 90-minute anime action film from 1995 about two gun shop owners turned reluctant bounty hunters caught in a lethal sting operation. Fast-paced, irreverent, and genuinely fun—all snappy dialogue, shootouts, and chemistry between its leads. For anyone who loves scrappy action comedies and doesn't need their anime precious or profound.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you want a loud, gun-savvy caper with a sharp-tongued pair of leads, where the banter and bullet-riddled set pieces carry the day.
Skip it if you want sleek, restrained animation, since the 1995 cel look, broad jokes and blunt gunplay can feel crude, and its busy plot scrambles more than it grips.
What it asks of you: Roughly ninety minutes, and it moves at a brisk clip, switching between stings, banter and gunfights without much pause for breath, so keep your attention on the screen.

If you liked this
Nikita1990
A stylish action thriller about a woman forced into covert work for the government. Same bone-deep pleasure in watching capable women outwit and outshoot their enemies, plus that perfect blend of humor, danger, and genuine character moments.
But It's French cinema from the '90s, which means slower pacing and a bleaker worldview than Gunsmith Cats. Some find it self-consciously cool in ways that don't age well.

Jackie Brown1997
A crime comedy where everyday people get pulled into impossible situations by forces they can't control. Two mismatched protagonists with heart, witty banter under pressure, and Tarantino's gift for making criminals feel like your friends.
But It's long, deliberately structured, and more interested in dialogue and character than action sequences. The pacing will feel glacial if you want constant momentum.

Commando1985
Pure 80s action excess with a one-liner for every occasion and a hero who treats an entire army like an inconvenience. Unapologetically stupid fun that knows exactly what it is and commits completely.
But The acting is wooden, the plot ridiculous, and the violence cartoonishly over-the-top. It's only fun if you're in on the joke and willing to laugh with it.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
In the Mood for Love2000
Both films live or die on the relationship between their two leads. Everything else is scaffolding for watching how these people understand each other.
Wong Kar-wai's masterpiece about two neighbors who discover their spouses are having an affair. Hypnotic visual poetry, minimal plot, maximum mood. It's a completely different register—but that same electric chemistry between two people carries the whole thing.
But There is almost no plot and the pace is deliberately dreamlike. It's shot in primary colors and repeated scenes. If you need narrative momentum or conventional action, this will feel like watching paint dry.

True Lies1994
James Cameron's masterpiece about a spy whose secret life collides with his real one. Action, comedy, and genuine emotional stakes all firing at once. A couple with real chemistry doing impossible things together.
But It's nearly two and a half hours of spectacle. If you want efficiency and lean storytelling, this indulgent 90s blockbuster will test your patience.

Point Break1991
An undercover cop infiltrates a surfing gang of bank robbers. Ridiculous premise executed with absolute sincerity, spectacular action, and a weird erotic charge between the leads that somehow makes it all work.
But The dialogue is sometimes laughably earnest and the plot is thin as a surfboard. You have to surrender to the absurdity completely or it falls apart.

The Long Kiss Goodnight1996
An amnesiac woman discovers she's a black ops assassin and teams up with a mercenary to find her past. Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson have incredible chemistry, and the script is smarter and funnier than it has any right to be.
But The first act moves slowly while exposition is dumped on you. Some sequences lean hard into late-90s action movie excess that hasn't aged gracefully.

Gunplay1951
A cat-and-mouse thriller about negotiation, deception, and two people who understand each other too well. Lean, tense, and genuinely clever about how power actually works between opponents.
But It's a quiet film about conversation. If you're here for spectacular action or constant movement, you'll find it painfully slow.

Swordfish2001
A hacker, a spy, and a criminal mastermind collide in a plot that's deliberately overwrought in the best way. Showy, kinetic editing, a terrific ensemble, and commitment to its own absurdity.
But It's a 2000s action film aged into self-parody. The plot is genuinely incoherent and the style overwhelms everything else—some find it exhausting rather than entertaining.

Cocaine Bear2023
Both treat violence as comedy without becoming cynical about it. Same willingness to be silly, same confidence that fun doesn't require prestige or meaning.
A black comedy where a bear gets into dumped cocaine and chaos ensues. Trashy, violent, hilarious, and completely uninterested in making sense. Pure genre delight with genuine craft underneath the mayhem.
But The tone is deliberately tonally confused and nothing matters thematically. Some find the mix of slapstick and genuine gore more alienating than funny.
