Ghosted

Other titles called Ghosted: the 2016 film.

A charming, self-aware action-comedy about a sweet guy who falls for a woman only to discover she's a spy. Chris Evans leans into earnest goofiness while Ana de Armas brings cool control to the contrast. It's light, fast-paced, and unashamed about being a date-movie in disguise—fun rather than clever, and perfectly fine with that.

TMDb rating3.4

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy a fizzy action comedy where the romance and the gags carry as much weight as the explosions, and you don't mind a crowd-pleaser that plays it safe.

Skip it if you want sharp, grounded spy thrills or a romance with real emotional bite, since this one leans on easy jokes and glossy set pieces that rarely surprise.

What it asks of you: Settle in for just under two hours of brisk, light-hearted chaos, with little demand beyond going along with the breezy tone and enjoying the banter.

The Proposal2009

A romantic comedy that knows how to balance chemistry with genuine laughs. Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock have the same playful banter energy, and it moves at a pace that keeps you smiling without demanding much of your brain.

But It's a studio rom-com with obvious plot beats and no real surprises. If you need originality over charm, this won't change your mind.

Red Notice2021

Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot in an action-comedy heist that's more interested in likeable people having fun than plot coherence. The chemistry is effortless and the action sequences are genuinely entertaining.

But The story is thin and the pacing gets lumpy in the middle. It coasts on charisma, which works until it doesn't.

Knight and Day2010

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in a spy-comedy where the charm is the whole point. It has the same 'ordinary person dragged into espionage' premise and leans hard into fun rather than stakes.

But Critics hated it on release. The tone wobbles between action and comedy, and some bits haven't aged gracefully.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw2019

Both treat their plots as scaffolding for character chemistry and set pieces. Neither pretends stakes matter more than fun, and both have a secret sweetness beneath the action.

Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in a Fast & Furious spinoff that ditched the franchise weight and became a pure action-comedy. It's dumb, it knows it's dumb, and it's having more fun than anything else here—chemistry and absurdity as the whole engine.

But It's aggressively silly with an almost cartoon logic to the action. If you need grounded storytelling or stakes that feel real, this will test your patience.

Bullet Train2022

Brad Pitt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and a packed cast in an action-comedy that's genuinely funny while delivering great set pieces. The banter between characters drives it as much as the plot.

But It's violent and loud, with a pace that never lets up. If you want quiet or subtlety, you're in the wrong car.

Bullet Train poster

Central Intelligence2016

Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart have natural chemistry that carries an action-comedy about a CIA agent and his old high school friend. It's silly in the best way and knows exactly what it is.

But The plot is forgettable and it relies heavily on Johnson and Hart's charm. Without them, this would be nothing.

Central Intelligence poster

Mr. & Mrs. Smith2005

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as married assassins who don't know about each other. It's stylish, funny, and has the same 'two people discovering something surprising about their partner' energy.

But It's glossier and more action-heavy than Ghosted. If you want grounded comedy, this leans toward the spectacular.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith poster

Midnight Run1988

Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin in a buddy action-comedy that's genuinely smart under its surface charm. The banter feels earned, and the action sequences work because you care about both characters.

But It's from 1988, so the pacing is slower. Modern audiences sometimes find it creaky, and the action is nothing flashy.

Midnight Run poster

The Nice Guys2016

Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe as mismatched detectives in 1970s LA. The dialogue is razor-sharp, the chemistry is electric, and it proves action-comedy can be genuinely well-made.

But It's more cynical than Ghosted. If you want warmth and sweetness, the tone here is grittier.

The Nice Guys poster

Tropic Thunder2008

An action-comedy about actors making an action movie, packed with absurdist humour and commitment to the chaos. It's funny in ways that reward repeated viewings and doesn't take itself seriously for a second.

But The humour is aggressive and occasionally offensive. It's also very much of its era, so some jokes land differently now.

Spy Game2001

Both feature a protagonist discovering their love interest's secret spy identity, but Spy Game uses that revelation to deepest emotional stakes, showing what Ghosted plays for laughs.

Brad Pitt and Robert Redford in a spy thriller that flashes between past and present, romance and action. It's slick, well-made, and the central relationship—mentor and student, separated by years—carries genuine weight.

But It's considerably more serious than Ghosted. The romance has tragedy attached, and the tone is espionage thriller first, comedy a distant second.

My Spy2020

Both star an action-movie tough guy (Evans, Bautista) playing against type with comedic vulnerability. Both suggest that the real strength of these actors isn't in their muscles but in their willingness to be lovable and a bit goofy.

Dave Bautista as a CIA operative forced to babysit a precocious girl. It's genuinely funny because Bautista leans into his own earnestness, and the film doesn't underestimate kids' intelligence. It's sweet without being saccharine.

But It's a Netflix film with modest ambitions and a family-movie sensibility. If you want spectacle or edge, you won't find it here.
