My Spy
- Spy action
- Light-hearted
A hulking CIA operative goes undercover to spy on a family and gets outwitted by their brilliant nine-year-old daughter. It's a comedy built on the contrast between Bautista's gruff tough-guy persona and a kid who's smarter than everyone else in the room. Gentle, funny, and genuinely charming—family action-comedy that doesn't talk down to children or adults.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy a grumpy tough guy being thoroughly outmanoeuvred by a sharp-tongued kid, with action beats that stay light and a lot of affection underneath the bluster.
Skip it if you want action with real stakes and grit, since the set pieces are brisk and cheerful and the comedy leans on broad, easy gags more than sharp writing.
What it asks of you: Under ninety-nine minutes, it moves briskly and stays bright throughout, asking you to switch off and enjoy the family-friendly chaos without much emotional weight to carry.

Paddington 22017
Another film that builds its heart on the gap between a gruff outsider and a family who wins him over through pure decency. Funny for adults, genuinely delightful for kids, and absolutely earned emotional beats.
But If you find talking animals irritating or expect more traditional action beats, the whimsy might feel slight.

The Bodyguard1992
The blueprint for 'stoic professional unexpectedly bonded with a kid.' Kevin Costner plays it straight, the protection detail is real, and the relationship feels genuine underneath the action movie surface.
But Dated in spots and more serious in tone. If you want laughs rather than sentiment, this skews harder toward drama.

Game Night2018
Jason Bateman anchors an ensemble comedy about regular people in an absurd situation. Sharp script, great cast chemistry, and it respects the audience's intelligence without being smug about it.
But The plot twists come fast and some feel convenient. If you prefer straightforward storytelling, the reversals might feel gimmicky.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Nanny1965
Both are about a stranger entering a family home with hidden motives. One is comedy about the façade cracking. The other is horror about what façades hide.
Bette Davis as a mysterious nanny hired to care for a wealthy family—except the twist is real and unsettling. A masterclass in tension built from everyday domestic situations, entirely lacking in action but absolutely riveting.
But Slow-burn psychological thriller with genuine menace. If you want lightness and fun, this goes somewhere dark and it doesn't apologize.

Tropic Thunder2008
Ben Stiller's action-comedy about a tough guy learning humility through unexpected circumstances. Absurd, quotable, and the action sequences are genuinely well-choreographed underneath the comedy.
But Crude and aggressive in ways My Spy deliberately avoids. The humor punches harder and the satire is mean-spirited by design.

Beverly Hills Cop1984
Eddie Murphy as a street cop loose in a fancy world, improvising his way through danger with charm and quick wit. The action is real, the comedy is character-driven, and it moves like nothing else.
But Eighties sensibility throughout—the product placement and car-heavy sequences feel dated. Also considerably more violent than you might expect from the comedy reputation.

The Other Guys2010
Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as mismatched cops pushed into action sequences they don't belong in. Great chemistry, surprisingly inventive comedy, and better-choreographed than it has any right to be.
But Wahlberg's character is aggressively annoying in ways designed to test your patience. If his shtick doesn't land, the whole film feels thin.

Rampage2018
Dwayne Johnson versus giant monsters. Pure spectacle with a surprisingly earnest relationship between Johnson and a gorilla. Knows exactly what it is and commits to it without apology.
But The plot is nonsense and the dialogue is functionally decorative. If you need story coherence or care about anything other than destruction, you'll be frustrated.

Kindergarten Cop1990
The grandfather of 'tough guy forced into childcare' comedy. Schwarzenegger actually commits to both the action and the absurdity, and the film trusts the premise completely.
But Genuinely dated in every way. Eighties action movie sensibilities and the classroom comedy hasn't aged as well as Schwarzenegger's central performance.

Spy Kids2001
The core premise inverted: here the kids are spies and the adults are the ones who need protecting. Same power-dynamic comedy, completely different execution.
Robert Rodriguez's wildly inventive family action film where the kids are actually the protagonists and actually competent. Visually creative, genuinely funny, and trusts kids to handle real danger without being patronizing.
But The CGI has aged poorly and the tone is deliberately cartoonish. If you need grounded realism, the hyperactive visual style will feel chaotic.

The Killer2023
Both use a professional operative as the lens. My Spy explores what happens when that professionalism cracks around human connection. The Killer explores what happens when it doesn't.
David Fincher's precise character study of an assassin, glacial and methodical. Not what you expect from a thriller—it's about temperament and routine, with bursts of violence that feel shocking because the film respects silence.
But Deliberately slow and internal. There's minimal plot and almost no sentimentality. If you watch My Spy for laughs, this will feel like punishment.
