Dhoom 2

Dhoom 2 is a stylish heist thriller where two cops chase a charming international thief across exotic locations. It's a big-budget Bollywood spectacle: globe-trotting action, elaborate set pieces, and movie-star charisma everywhere. Built for audiences who want slick entertainment, technical skill, and the simple pleasure of watching attractive people outwit each other.

Ocean's Eleven2001

The template for modern heist films: a charismatic criminal, a crack team, globe-trotting glamour, and schemes within schemes. You'll see everything Dhoom 2 learned from and how Bollywood remade it for its own sensibility.

But At over two hours with multiple plot threads, it occasionally meanders. Some jokes haven't aged brilliantly.

Fast Five2011

Escalates from car chases to full spectacle: elaborate heists, international locations, and a charismatic antagonist who's almost more fun than the heroes. It captures that same infectious energy Dhoom 2 pioneered in Bollywood.

But The plot is intentionally thin and ridiculous. If you need character depth, you'll struggle by the third act.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout2018

Real stunts, impossible logistics, and a hero who's also hunted. It has Dhoom 2's love of technical virtuosity and the cat-and-mouse game between cop and criminal becoming almost intimate.

But Two hours and thirty-four minutes of plotting can feel dense. The story takes itself seriously in ways Dhoom 2 doesn't.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Rififi1955

Both treat thievery as craft and theater, where the crime itself is the art, and the criminal's technical brilliance is what makes them irresistible.

The grandfather of all heist films: a 30-minute jewel robbery with no dialogue, pure visual storytelling. It invented the language Dhoom 2 speaks—the artistry of theft, the technical ingenuity, the criminal as protagonist.

But French New Wave noir in 1955. Black and white, slow burn, no romance subplot. The gap between this and Dhoom 2 is about 50 years of cinema.

Jism2003

Earlier Bollywood thriller with similar energy: stylish, crime-focused, built on chemistry between leads. Shows how Indian cinema was exploring sexier, more international storytelling before Dhoom.

But The sexual politics are dated. It's also less polished than what came after—rougher around the edges.

Ek Tha Tiger2012

Spy thriller with the same globe-trotting appeal and star power. Salman Khan chasing and being chased, romantic tension baked into action sequences. Proves Dhoom 2's formula could birth sequels.

But It leans heavily on star wattage. Without that, the plot is fairly predictable.

Ek Tha Tiger poster

Singham2011

Cop thriller with style and intensity. Ajay Devgn as a righteous force against crime, with genuinely inventive action sequences. Similar energy to Jai's arc, but grittier.

But More serious-minded than Dhoom 2. If you want the lightness and charm, this pivots toward raw anger.

Knight and Day2010

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in a romp about a spy who might be trustworthy and the civilian caught in his wake. Captures that flirtation-under-duress vibe between hunter and hunted.

But Tries to be funny when it should be tense. The tone whiplash can be jarring.

The Italian Job2003

Heist film with charm, ensemble work, and a clever protagonist. Mini Coopers, gold, and characters who enjoy their own cleverness—it shares Dhoom 2's playfulness about villainy.

But Smaller in scale than you might expect. Some twists feel more convenient than earned.

Thugs of Hindostan2018

Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan as charming criminals versus the empire. Epic scale, production design, and the same fascination with dapper antiheroes that drives Dhoom 2.

But Wildly uneven and narratively confused. Ambition outstripped execution by a significant margin.

The Bourne Identity2002

Both taught modern action cinema how to move between continents while keeping audiences breathless. Same DNA, opposite moods.

International espionage with kinetic action, locations that feel real, and a chase plot that moves like nothing else in its era. It's how American cinema learned to do globe-trotting speed. Dhoom 2 borrowed this energy and Bollywoodified it.

But Handheld camera work and cuts so fast they borderline disorient. The emotional core is trauma, not charm—entirely different register.

OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies2006

Both films fetishize spy movie glamour and know exactly how silly that is. They just disagree on whether to wink at the camera.

French spy comedy that deconstructs 1960s espionage tropes: beautiful women, exotic locations, ridiculous plots played dead straight. It's about the *pleasure* of style-over-substance action, which is exactly what Dhoom 2 is about, just more sincere.

But Broad satire that might feel dated if you don't know what it's parodying. Deliberately artificial in ways that some viewers find annoying rather than funny.
