Thaandavam

A stylish Tamil action thriller about a blind man with echolocation abilities on a revenge rampage. Vikram commits fully to a physically demanding role, and the film luxuriates in slick fight choreography and technical ambition. It's for viewers who prize visceral action spectacle and don't mind when plot takes a backseat to craft.

Jai Bhim2021

A powerhouse Tamil drama with Vikram delivering a restrained, intelligent performance. The film balances rage with legal precision, exploring systemic injustice through a gripping courtroom and investigative narrative.

But Three and a half hours long, and emotionally brutal. It demands your full attention and won't offer much relief or levity.

Madras2014

Brutal Tamil gangster film with real physicality and neighborhood texture. It's about turf wars and loyalty, shot with grit and an unflinching eye for violence and its costs.

But Aggressively bleak, with characters you won't like and a story that doesn't redeem anyone. The pacing is deliberately slow in places.

Pushpa: The Rise2021

A massive Telugu action film built on charisma and spectacular set pieces. Allu Arjun owns the screen in a role designed for maximum swagger, and the filmmaking is confidently trashy fun.

But Two hours forty-five minutes of a story you could sketch in minutes. Subtitled for English speakers. The sequel bait ending lands with a thud.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

City Hunter1993

Both are built on one actor's willingness to destroy their body for a role. Both prioritize kinetic craft and spectacle over character depth. Thaandavam borrows the DNA.

A Hong Kong action masterpiece by Ringo Lam about obsessive pursuit and urban violence. The fight choreography is balletic, the cinematography is gorgeous, and Jackie Chan commits physically in ways that still astonish.

But Dated in places and the politics are rough. Subtitled, and the editing is frenetic enough to exhaust you.

Iru Mugan2016

Vikram again, in a gleaming sci-fi action thriller that throws logic out the window in favor of stylish set pieces and spy-film aesthetics. Pure visual craft over narrative coherence.

But The plot barely holds together and the emotional beats land flat. You're watching for technique, not story.

Vada Chennai2018

Violent Tamil crime saga with real atmosphere and performance depth. It builds a lived-in world of smuggling, corruption and consequences with intelligent cinematography and committed acting.

But Slow-burn and grim. The first half meanders before it finds its footing, and there's minimal humor to lighten the mood.

A Wednesday!2008

A taut Hindi thriller about a stranger and a cop playing high-stakes games across a single day. Anupam Kher is magnetic, and the plot twists land with genuine snap.

But Hinges on a twist that, if you guess it early, drains the urgency. Some of the social commentary feels dated now.

Dhoom 22006

Bollywood action spectacle about a gentleman thief and the obsessed cop chasing him. It's stylish, fun, technically accomplished, and genuinely entertaining in a way that doesn't demand much thinking.

But The plot is tissue-thin and the humor is broad. If you find Bollywood's register unearned or exhausting, this won't change your mind.

Dhoom 2 poster

Singham2011

Ajay Devgn as a moral-absolutist cop in a loud, propulsive action film. It's got real energy and knows exactly what it is: a delivery system for fight choreography and one-liners.

But Incredibly simplistic morally. The plotting is rudimentary and the femme lead is barely present.

Ghajini2008

Aamir Khan in a high-concept action thriller about a man with short-term memory loss pursuing revenge. The gimmick is visual fun and the action is well-mounted.

But The premise is window dressing for a fairly conventional revenge story. It doesn't explore the memory loss in any interesting psychological way.

Andhadhun2018

Both use a blind protagonist's perspective as a narrative gimmick with action consequences. One is operatic spectacle; this is measured, cerebral genre craft. Opposite answers to the same prompt.

A Hindi-language thriller about a blind pianist entangled in murder. It's a genre exercise—tense, clever, and beautifully structured, with genuine surprises and a performance that plays blindness as cunning.

But It's a puzzle box thriller that doesn't have much to say beyond plot mechanics. Some may find the trickery cold rather than engaging.
