It's a genre film executed with confidence and visual flair—for anyone who loves crime thrillers with propulsive momentum and doesn't need subtlety.

Jai Bhim2021

A gripping crime thriller that builds tension through investigation and moral complexity. Suriya's performance carries an emotional weight while the narrative unfolds with page-turning intensity and genuine stakes.

But The subject matter—police brutality and caste violence—is heavy and sustained. This isn't escapism; it demands your full attention and leaves you unsettled.

Kabali2016

Rajinikanth as a crime lord returning from exile. Stylish, operatic, absolutely committed to its own mythology. The action sequences are inventive and the film moves with swagger and confidence.

But The plot threads can feel scattered, and the film prioritises mood and image over narrative coherence. Some sequences meander when you want momentum.

Singham2011

Ajay Devgn as a righteous cop dismantling corruption with fist and determination. Energetic, catchy, beautifully shot action—this is mainstream Hindi cinema firing on all cylinders with a hero you root for.

But It's a straightforward good-versus-evil narrative with little moral complexity. If you need your heroes flawed and ambiguous, this won't satisfy you.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Eeram2009

Both are regional action films from 2006 about professional killers, but Eeram inverts the register—trading spectacle for psychology, exploring the killer's interior life rather than his mythic exterior.

Released the same year as Pokiri, this Tamil thriller about a contract killer features Jiiva in a quieter, introspective version of the same archetype. Where Pokiri crackles, Eeram simmers—it's about the psychological unraveling of a man who kills for money and what that costs him internally.

But The Tamil cinema conventions are thick and the film moves at its own meditative pace. It won't give you the action rush you might crave, and subtitles require active engagement.

Commando - A One Man Army2013

Vidyut Jamwal's athletic physicality drives relentless action sequences. The film is uninterested in psychology—it's pure movement and spectacle, shot with clarity and enthusiasm.

But The story is paper-thin and the dialogue serviceable. You're watching for the action alone, which is fine, but the film never attempts anything beyond that.

Rosemary's Baby1968

Akshay Kumar leads a tight ensemble thriller about covert operations. Multiple plot threads weave together, the pacing is sharp, and it has real international scope and ambition for Indian action cinema.

But The tone wavers between spy procedural and emotional beats. Some character moments interrupt momentum, and the film can't quite decide what it wants to be.

Badlapur2015

Varun Dhawan's performance carries a simmering rage through this revenge thriller. Gritty, character-driven, with action that serves the story rather than stopping it. Visually distinctive and darkly compelling.

But The revenge narrative is familiar territory, and the pacing is deliberate when you might want propulsion. Not everyone connects with its brooding tone.

Thaandavam2012

Vikram and Jayam Ravi face off in this cat-and-mouse thriller with slick cinematography and committed performances. The moral ambiguity keeps you guessing about who's really hunting whom.

But The Tamil dialogue and regional context may feel distant if you're unfamiliar with the industry. The film assumes you know its conventions.

Ek Tha Tiger2012

Salman Khan as a secret agent in an action romance that spans continents. Lighter on the psyche than Pokiri but heavier on charm and spectacle. The action set pieces are generous and well-mounted.

But The romance subplot takes up real estate that could go to plot. If you find Salman Khan's charisma impenetrable, nothing here will convert you.

Natrang2010

Medha Manjrekar's performance as a crime boss is controlled and unsettling. The film has atmosphere and treats its world seriously, with dialogue that crackles and tension that breathes.

But This is a Marathi film with regional textures that don't always translate. The pacing is slower, more deliberate, and the payoffs are subtle rather than explosive.

Rang De Basanti2006

Both share 2006, Telugu-influenced action idiom, and a restless energy, but Rang De Basanti trades anonymity and moral ambiguity for named characters with real stakes and a political conscience.

Aamir Khan in an ensemble film about activism and revolution that builds from college drama to political thriller. It's propulsive, visually inventive, emotionally invested in its characters' transformation from apathy to action—the energy of Pokiri channelled into ideological conviction.

But The second half shifts tone entirely into something more serious and tragic. The film asks you to meet it emotionally when it stops being a thriller and becomes something closer to tragedy.

The Godfather1972

The spiritual opposite in approach: Pokiri is a contract killer with no interior life or obligation; The Godfather is about the suffocating weight of obligation and the erosion of the man beneath the role. Both explore what it costs to be outside normal society.

The architectural blueprint for every crime narrative that followed. Coppola's film moves with Pokiri's momentum but builds a genuine moral and emotional architecture underneath. Watch it to understand why Pandu—the killer with no background, no allegiances, only contracts—is the inverse of every decision Michael Corleone makes.

But At nearly three hours and made in 1972, it has a slowness and deliberation that modern action films abandoned for good reason. If you need constant propulsion, this will feel glacial in places.
