Deadpool & Wolverine is the R-rated superhero mashup engineered for maximum needle-drops, cameos, and gore-splattered slapstick, with Reynolds's fourth-wall-breaking mercenary dragging a weary, foul-mouthed Wolverine into a multiversal salvage job. It's less a story than a victory lap for two decades of Fox X-Men movies, gleefully profane and built to reward people who already know exactly what they're being winked at.

But There are no jokes and no fights — just a real actor confronting mortality and a career on camera, unscripted.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 32023

Same needle-drop irreverence and found-family sentimentality as Deadpool & Wolverine, but with a genuinely emotional gut-punch underneath the jokes.

But It's the end of a trilogy you'd ideally have seen the first two parts of, and the humor is gentler than Deadpool's.

Waititi's colorful, wisecracking reinvention of a stale franchise proves the trick works even without the R-rating and the blood spray.

But Effects and framing device feel dated now, and the kid-protagonist structure hasn't aged as well as the satire itself.

Swap the multiverse for a garage cloning machine and the superhero for a stressed-out dad, and it's the same engine as Deadpool & Wolverine — confronting alternate versions of yourself — shrunk down to ordinary human scale.

Michael Keaton clones himself for more free time and ends up managing increasingly degraded copies of his own personality, played entirely for domestic comedy.

But No action, no stakes beyond a suburban marriage, and very much a product of mid-90s studio comedy sensibilities.
