Candy Stripe Nurses
A 1974 exploitation comedy about three candy-stripe nurses navigating sex, crime, and hospital intrigue. It's a breezy, knowing blend of soft-core fun and genuine crime-caper plotting, shot through with the era's sexual frankness. Made for anyone who loves period trash with real craft underneath, or who wants to understand what the seventies actually felt like on a Friday night.

Hospital1970
Fred Wiseman's documentary verité of a New York teaching hospital captures the actual chaos underneath the institution—bodies, suffering, bureaucracy, mistakes. The unscripted reality that Candy Stripe Nurses is playfully ignoring.
But It's quiet, static, and genuinely bleak. You're watching real people in real pain, which is the opposite of fun, and some sequences are hard to sit with.

The Student Nurses1970
Roger Corman's proto-Candy Stripe template: young women in healthcare, intercut crime and sex plots, anarchic tone. You can trace the DNA directly. It has the same "why not both?" energy.
But It's slightly more scattered than its successor, and the seams show. The sexual content feels more uncomfortable than knowing, which changes the whole mood.

Coma1978
A prestige medical thriller with real plot architecture—corruption in a hospital, a woman taking it on herself to investigate. Genevieve Bujold brings intelligence to a story about doctors who can't be trusted.
But It's earnest where Candy Stripe Nurses is winking. Watching someone solve a hospital crime soberly might feel like the opposite of fun, depending on your mood.

Something you would not have found on your own.
Klute1971
Both use sexuality as plot currency and character motive, but Klute keeps the stakes real while Candy Stripe Nurses keeps them light. Watching them back-to-back shows the full range of what you can do with that engine.
Jane Fonda as a sex worker entangled with a cop investigating a missing person—the same power dynamics and sexual negotiation as Candy Stripe Nurses, but refracted through a Pakula thriller with genuine psychological unease. The sex is a means of control and survival, not liberation. It's stunning filmmaking.
But It's slow, morally complicated, and occasionally difficult to watch. The pleasure is intellectual and disturbing, not fun. You're not rooting for anyone to win.

Hot Pants
A crime-caper comedy with similar tonal ambitions—sex and plotting playing off each other, period charm, the same cheerful amorality. Good evidence that Candy Stripe Nurses wasn't alone in trying this blend.
But It's notably less coherent and more padded. The seams show badly, and a lot of runtime goes nowhere. It lacks the tightness that makes its predecessor actually watchable.
Barefoot in the Park1967
Both capture the early seventies sexual revolution through the eyes of young women deciding what freedom means. Candy Stripe Nurses is exploitation, Barefoot is romantic comedy, but they're asking similar questions.
Robert Redford and Jane Fonda as newlyweds figuring out marriage and freedom in New York—a comedy about sexuality and generational values that's genuinely smart and funny. If you love the period and the free-spirited energy of Candy Stripe Nurses but want craft and star power, this is it.
But It's essentially a stage play blown up to film size. The pacing is slow, the plotting is light, and if you're not charmed by the central couple, there's not much else.

Thriller: A Cruel Picture1973
Both made in 1974, both using the body and sexuality as the axis of a crime plot. One laughs, one rages. Watching them together captures the full spectrum of how cinema was processing sex and power in that moment.
A Swedish rape-revenge film made the exact same year—the flip side of sexual libertinism. A woman tricked into sex slavery trains herself for payback. It's shocking, formally brilliant, and treats sexuality as a weapon in the truest sense.
But It's graphically brutal, deeply disturbing, and entirely humorless. If Candy Stripe Nurses is playfulness about sex and crime, this is the dark mirror. Some scenes won't leave you alone for days.
