Survivors
Other titles called Survivors: the 1975 series (BBC One).
- Post-apocalyptic
- Very dark
A BBC drama about ordinary people rebuilding after a pandemic wipes out 90% of humanity. Grounded and character-focused rather than spectacular, it's fascinated by the mundane problems of survival—finding water, growing food, trusting strangers—and how quickly civilization's rules dissolve. For people who prefer intimate human stories to apocalyptic spectacle.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you want a slow, grounded survival story where the dread comes from ordinary choices about trust, scarcity and who to keep alive, rather than from spectacle.
Skip it if the early episodes are talky and deliberate, and the premise is played with plain domestic restraint, so it frustrates if you crave big set pieces or fast cuts.
What it asks of you: Hour-long episodes that settle in for conversations and quiet journeys, so it rewards patience across its twelve episodes and two series.

The Walking Dead2010
Survivors done with more resources and a much larger ensemble. Same DNA: small groups navigating trust, leadership and brutal choices as the old world crumbles around them. Exceptional early seasons.
But Becomes increasingly melodramatic and loses narrative discipline after season five. The zombie mythology eventually feels like scaffolding for soap opera plotting.

Station Eleven2021
Post-apocalyptic but tender and literary. Traces how culture and art matter as much as supplies. Uses fractured timelines to show before, during and after with equal weight. Beautifully shot and acted.
But Deliberately paces itself slowly and meditatively. If you want propulsive plot momentum and clear antagonists, this will frustrate you.

The Last of Us2023
HBO's adaptation finds the emotional core in a fungal apocalypse. Character work matters more than spectacle. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey's relationship carries everything. Each episode deepens rather than repeats.
But The source material fame means no surprises if you've played the games. Some episodes pivot away from the main characters entirely, which breaks momentum for some viewers.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Road2009
Both pit ordinary people against absolute scarcity and ask what remains of humanity when systems fail. Survivors finds small lights in darkness; The Road finds darkness with small lights. Inverse tones, same question.
McCarthy's novel adapted into pure atmosphere: a father and son walking through ash toward the ocean. Not about survival-as-action but survival-as-endurance. Visual poetry of total collapse. Cormac McCarthy's despair made cinema.
But Relentlessly bleak without relief. No character arcs, no victories, no hope—only the question of whether to keep going. Some find it unendurable rather than cathartic.

Threads1984
A British nuclear-war drama that shares Survivors' DNA: devastation, ordinary people, the unglamorous collapse of systems. Bleaker and more concentrated. Essential viewing about what actually happens after.
But Relentlessly grim without any moments of grace or hope. Designed to upset you. Shot on video which feels grainy and cheap, but that's partly the point.

The Leftovers2014
Two percent of the world vanishes without explanation. The show is actually about how people process loss and find meaning. Builds to something transcendent. Damon Lindelof at his best.
But The mystery is never solved. If you need answers about *why* things happened, you'll leave angry. Dense and emotionally exhausting to watch.

Sweet Magnolias2020
Not post-apocalyptic, but similar DNA: a tight ensemble of complex women navigating crisis, loyalty and the gap between public faces and private breaking points. Character-driven Southern drama that actually earns its emotional beats.
But Leans heavily into melodrama and romantic subplots. The tone is lighter and warmer than Survivors, which some will find unfocused.

Dark2017
A small German town unravels after children disappear. Intricate plotting, genuine mystery, ensemble cast who all matter. The sense of a tight community under pressure mirrors Survivors' claustrophobia.
But Fiercely complex narrative that demands attention and reward-giving. If you're not invested in solving the puzzle, the soap opera elements feel thin.

Into the Badlands2015
Post-apocalyptic but stylised and kinetic. Beautiful cinematography, strong ensemble, and a world where the old rules have genuinely changed. More visually ambitious than Survivors but similar in exploring what communities become.
But The mythology gets increasingly complicated and sometimes feels half-baked. Canceled on a cliffhanger. High action quotient means less character quiet.

Yellowjackets2021
Survival drama with a strong ensemble and genuine mystery. Girls stranded after a plane crash; the show cuts between past and present. Increasingly weird and ambitious. Wildly entertaining.
But Becomes increasingly convoluted and seems uncertain of its own mythology. Some plot threads feel abandoned. The energy can tip into chaos.

Severance2022
Both are about people trying to understand the new world they've inherited and whether the old rules still apply. Survivors: after plague. Severance: after corporate restructuring of consciousness. Same existential unmooring.
Not post-apocalyptic but structurally similar: a small ensemble navigates a world with new, unknown rules that override their autonomy. Paranoia, distrust, the search for truth in fragmented information. Visually stunning and architecturally brilliant.
But Deliberately cryptic and slow-burning. Season one ended on cliffhangers with no resolution. Requires patience and tolerance for ambiguity. Some see this as sophistication; others see it as withholding.
