SSSS.Gridman
A sharp, visually dazzling anime about a high schooler pulled into digital battles with no memory of why. SSSS.Gridman burns with retro tokusatsu energy while asking unsettling questions about reality, identity and what happens when the rules of your world start bending. Gorgeous direction, a mystery that matters, and a sense that nothing is quite what it seems.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love tokusatsu-style monster battles framed by a quiet, mysterious school life, and enjoy a story that trusts you to piece its mysteries together as the pieces arrive.
Skip it if you want steady, standalone monster episodes, since its slower opening stretches are more about atmosphere and friendship than fights.
What it asks of you: Twelve episodes of twenty-five minutes each, with a slow first stretch that rewards patience, then a faster, denser stretch where you need to keep track of who knows what.

Kill la Kill2013
From the same studio, with the same feverish visual imagination and narrative ambition. Both games question the nature of reality through spectacle. A masterclass in making form serve story.
But Relentlessly intense and sometimes gratuitously sexualized. It won't let you settle into comfort or predictability.

Neon Genesis Evangelion1995
A show that builds mystery into its DNA and then systematically unravels what you think you know. Both explore identity and trauma beneath monster-fighting surfaces. Essential.
But Dense philosophical territory. The ending baffles and disturbs as much as it enlightens. Demands active viewing.

Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story2020
A magical girl show that dismantles the genre from within. Like Gridman, it uses brightness to hide something darker, and makes you reconsider everything once the pattern emerges.
But Deceptively cute in appearance while dealing with despair and sacrifice. Tonal whiplash is the point, not a bug.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Kamen Rider Hibiki The Movie: Hibiki & The Seven War Oni2005
Gridman is a love letter to 1990s tokusatsu, and Hibiki is what that tradition looked like when treated with mythic weight. Both ask if monsters are the real threat.
A tokusatsu series that treats the monster-of-the-week format as genuine folk horror. The same practical effects and stunt choreography that inspired Gridman, but played with documentary-like seriousness. A hidden lineage.
But Slower paced than modern anime. Shot on video in the mid-2000s. Some episodes feel repetitive, and the series went through troubled production.

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann2007
Giant robots and escalating absurdity as vehicles for genuine emotional stakes. Both films share a love of bright colors, dynamic action, and the question of what power actually means.
But The second half pivots hard tonally. Some find it melodramatic; others find that essential to what it's doing.

Sword Art Online2012
A digital world where the stakes feel real and identity gets tangled with the virtual. Different approach, same thematic DNA about trapped people fighting for truth.
But The show has uneven pacing and some writing choices that don't land. The harem dynamics will irritate many viewers.

Little Witch Academia2017
Another Trigger production with infectious charm and visual invention. The warmth and comedy don't diminish genuine stakes. Proves spectacle and heart aren't opposites.
But Lighter in tone overall. If you want the darker Gridman mood, this might feel too bright and safe.

Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch2006
A protagonist granted strange power, drawn into conflict he doesn't fully understand, surrounded by mysteries about reality itself. Both love elaborate plotting and visual flair.
But Convoluted at times. The ambition outpaces the execution in places, and later seasons have pacing problems.

Carole & Tuesday2019
Watanabe directs two singers on Mars with the same lush visual storytelling. Different genre entirely, but same willingness to use style to tell emotional truths.
But A romance-driven show about music rather than action. Some find it indulgent; the melodrama isn't for everyone.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu2006
Reality bends around a girl who doesn't know her own power. A show constantly asking what's real and who's in control. Groundbreaking in structure and tone.
But Deliberately frustrating and obtuse. The broadcast order is confusing on purpose. Rewards obsessive rewatching, punishes casual viewing.

Paprika2006
Both use spectacle to explore the fragility of consciousness. Both ask: if your perception breaks, is it the world or you?
Satoshi Kon's masterpiece about dreams bleeding into waking life. The same visual chaos and sinuous color work as Gridman, but in a psychedelic two-hour sprint. Reality unraveling as pure cinema.
But Dense and hallucinatory. Some sequences confound more than clarify. The finale is ecstatic but oblique; it won't give you neat answers.
