Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

A wild, anime-inflected remix of the *Scott Pilgrim* universe that abandons the original premise entirely. Ramona takes the lead as reality fractures into something stranger and more inventive. It's maximalist, playful, and utterly committed to its own chaos—for viewers who loved the original's style but want something genuinely unpredictable.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like your comedy fast, goofy and full of video-game sound effects, and want it drawn as bouncy anime that keeps the jokes landing.

Skip it if you want slower character moments, since the frantic pace and rapid-fire gags rarely pause long enough to let anyone breathe.

What it asks of you: Eight episodes of about half an hour each, bright and fast throughout, so it rewards being watched without distraction.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners2022

Shares the anime aesthetic, breakneck pacing, and willingness to derail its own story for character moments. Visually stunning and emotionally devastating in turns.

But Tonal whiplash between comedy and genuine tragedy might feel jarring. Also genuinely sad in ways that linger.

Arcane: League of Legends2021

Another video-game-adjacent animated series that prioritizes character over plot, with inventive visual storytelling and a cast you'll obsess over within minutes.

But First act feels slow if you're not invested in world-building. Some may find the anime style less immediately grabbing than live-action.

Arcane: League of Legends poster

Harley Quinn2019

Anarchic, self-aware comedy that gleefully ignores what you expect from its source material. Foul-mouthed, absurd, genuinely funny, and surprisingly heartfelt about friendship.

But Relentlessly crude humor won't land for everyone. Feels less like traditional storytelling than a series of set pieces.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Everything Everywhere All at Once2022

Both abandon their premise's expected logic to explore something weirder about identity and relationships. Same structural DNA applied to wildly different registers.

Uses multiverse chaos to tell a story about loneliness and connection instead of plot gymnastics. Genre mashup of cosmic horror, martial arts, laundromat comedy, and genuine tenderness. Messy and alive in exactly the way *Takes Off* is.

But Can feel overstuffed and scattered if you're looking for narrative clarity. The tonal shifts might read as indulgent rather than inspired.

Fleabag2016

Brilliant genre-juggling with tonal shifts that somehow work. Fourth-wall breaks, visual inventiveness, and a protagonist who's chaotic and selfish but completely alive on screen.

But Very British sensibility. The emotional core might feel like tonal whiplash if you're only here for laughs.

Community2009

Masters of genre pastiche and structural rule-breaking. Each episode becomes something new. Genuinely weird and genuinely funny, with a core of real affection for its cast.

But Later seasons lose focus. Some episodes are experimental in ways that don't quite land. Can feel self-congratulatory about its own cleverness.

The Midnight Gospel2020

Psychedelic animation, bonkers premise, and surprisingly profound conversations tucked inside sci-fi nonsense. Six episodes that swing wildly between hilarious and heartbreaking.

But Meditative pacing and existential themes beneath the trippiness might frustrate if you want consistent energy. Some found it slightly self-indulgent.

Saint Seiya1986

Anime adaptation of a game that's already stylish, about a woman reshaping her narrative and her world. Gorgeous, funny, and full of genuine character work between the action.

But If you know nothing about the game, some character beats might feel unearned. Shorter season means fewer episodes to settle into.

Saint Seiya poster

Kill la Kill2013

Unhinged energy, gorgeous fluid animation, and genuine joy in its own absurdity. It's maximalist and sincere simultaneously—exactly the tone *Scott Pilgrim* occasionally reaches for.

But Extremely fanservice-heavy in ways that distract from the actual story. Gets progressively weirder in ways that might lose you.

Kill la Kill poster

Pantheon2022

Science fiction animated series with the visual inventiveness and character focus you're looking for. Genuinely clever ideas about consciousness and identity wrapped in compelling storytelling.

But Slower burn than you might expect. Some found the ending ambiguous in an unsatisfying way.

Adaptation.2002

Both are shows about entertainment that keep undercutting themselves, that care more about dismantling their own logic than serving it. Committed to confusion as a form of honesty.

A movie about writing a script that isn't actually about that. Dizzying, funny, meta in service of something real and desperate. Wants to frustrate you into understanding it better.

But Deliberately refuses traditional narrative satisfaction. If you want a clear three-act story, this will drive you mad.

Delicious in Dungeon2024

Both use genre framework as springboard for character work. Neither is interested in delivering what you think you're getting—both want to tell you something about community instead.

Anime that treats comic-fantasy premise as earnest worldbuilding. Funny without being silly, gorgeous monster design, and surprisingly tender about found family and cultural difference within its adventure.

But Slower pacing than anime usually attempts. Some might find the creature-cooking premise off-putting or gimmicky.
