Record of Ragnarok

Record of Ragnarok is a stylish anime tournament where history's greatest humans face gods in single combat. It's bombastic and earnest, leaning hard into spectacle and character moments between fights. Built for anyone who loves shonen energy, mythological deep cuts, and the specific thrill of watching underdogs land impossible punches.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy hyped-up, trash-talking tournament anime where every fight is a loud showcase of personality and martial spectacle, and you don't mind the premise being pure excess.

Skip it if the bouts follow a near-identical rhythm, so if you need a story that steadily gathers momentum, this may feel like a string of repeats.

What it asks of you: Short episodes of roughly 25 minutes stack up to a long haul across three seasons, so pace yourself and expect loud, quick bursts of combat.

Jujutsu Kaisen2020

Gorgeous fight choreography with real emotional stakes. Characters you'll care about deeply, and battles that function as character development rather than filler. Season one is nearly flawless.

But The first few episodes are slower setup, and some viewers find the protagonist annoying. The pacing occasionally stutters.

Demon Slayer2019

Stunning animation that turns combat into art. Every fight feels important and personal. The show respects both its characters and its audience's intelligence about what makes a moment matter.

But The main character's voice can grate. Also lighter in tone than Ragnarok—sometimes feels less weighty despite the high stakes.

My Hero Academia2016

Captures that same underdog-versus-impossible energy. Excellent character work across a large cast, and the tournament arcs are genuinely thrilling. Great soundtrack too.

But It runs long and some arcs drag. The later seasons lose momentum. Requires patience to reach the best material.

Carole & Tuesday2019

Both use public competition—humans tested before an audience—as the frame for genuine character evolution and human connection in high-stakes situations.

A musical anime about two girls performing duets on Mars while the world watches. Ragnarok's tournament structure applied to song competition. Gorgeous, earnest, character-driven, absolutely underrated.

But If you hate music-heavy narratives or character drama over plot, this will feel slow. The production animation fluctuates. Distinctly not an action show.

Chainsaw Man2022

Wild tonal swings between comedy and brutality. Inventive combat design, charismatic lead, and a willingness to surprise you. Visually distinctive in a crowded space.

But The humor isn't for everyone and can undercut serious moments. Some find the protagonist's horniness exhausting rather than charming.

Attack on Titan2013

Epic scope with genuinely shocking twists. The final arc in particular elevates it from action show to genuine tragedy. Exceptional character arcs across the board.

But The middle seasons bog down in political intrigue when you want battles. The ending is divisive and some fans feel betrayed by it.

One-Punch Man2015

Deconstructs the shonen formula by making the hero impossibly strong. Hilarious and visually inventive. The Season One animation is genuinely remarkable.

But Season Two's animation quality drops significantly. Without the underdog angle, some find it less engaging than traditional shounen.

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works2014

Incredible fight direction and gorgeous animation. Character-driven despite the tournament structure. The final act is genuinely moving and resolves things with real weight.

But The first half is slow worldbuilding. Requires familiarity with the Fate franchise to feel truly rewarding. Can feel overstuffed.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood2009

Masterwork of plotting where every detail matters. Fights emerge from character and ideology rather than just spectacle. The final arc is phenomenal.

But Slower pacing in the middle section. The early episodes feel formulaic. Takes time to find its footing despite its eventual brilliance.

Kill la Kill2013

Absolutely unhinged energy and commitment to visual storytelling over dialogue. Tournament arcs that are legitimately creative. Refuses to take itself seriously in refreshing ways.

But The fanservice will alienate many viewers. Chaotic editing can be exhausting. Not interested in coherent plotting, which frustrates some.
