Mako Mermaids
A boy discovers he's become a merman after a midnight swim at a forbidden island, then must hide his transformation while navigating high school and an underwater world he never knew existed. It's cheerful, briskly paced, and perfectly calibrated for viewers discovering fantasy adventures. Great for families and anyone who enjoys low-stakes magical-world-building with heart.

H2O: Just Add Water2006
The spiritual predecessor: three Australian girls turn into mermaids, discover friendship and secrets, and navigate high school with wet hair. Same tone, same charm, same reliable formula that works.
But The effects are of their era. If you need modern production values, this will feel dated in ways that matter to you.

The Owl House2020
A teen stumbles into a magical world and must hide their true nature from authorities while building a chosen family. Slightly darker and more ambitious than Mako, but with the same warm core.
But It's animated, which some find less immersive. The early episodes are gentler than later ones; patience helps.

Amphibia2019
A girl is transported to a frog world and must build relationships with her rescuers while learning who she really is. Cozy, funny, with genuine emotional stakes beneath the adventure.
But The first season takes time to find its footing. Some plot threads feel slow if you're looking for constant momentum.

Something you would not have found on your own.
Riverdale2017
Both use high school as camouflage for something wilder underneath, but Riverdale is what happens when you let the darkness win and the normal world crumbles.
Small-town high schoolers with secrets—but Riverdale weaponizes the formula into something genuinely strange and dangerous. Same setting as Mako's everyday scenes, entirely different beast underneath.
But It becomes increasingly baroque and unhinged. By season two it's solving murders with the logic of a fever dream. Commit to the weirdness or bail early.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief2010
A boy discovers he's the son of a god and must navigate a secret magical world while on the run. Same bewilderment-to-belonging arc, similar pacing, genuinely funny.
But The film adaptation simplifies the book significantly. Book fans find it thin; newcomers often enjoy it more.

A Wizard's Tale2018
An animated boy-discovers-magic story with genuine heart, solid world-building, and characters you root for. Underrated and genuinely warming.
But It's not flashy. If you need spectacle, this quiet story won't grab you immediately.

The Magicians2015
College students discover magic is real and must master it while uncovering dangerous secrets. More mature than Mako, but shares the discovery-of-hidden-world framework.
But Significantly darker and more adult. The tonal shift from whimsy to genuine peril happens fast and stays.

Descendants2015
Teenagers from a magical world navigate a normal school while harboring secrets. Energetic, fun, and unafraid to be theatrical about its own premise.
But It's a Disney Channel film, which means it commits fully to that register. Irony will get in your way.

Dark2017
Both are about discovering you're not who you thought you were and having to navigate two worlds at once, but Dark treats that discovery as tragedy rather than adventure.
A German series where a boy vanishes in a small town and returns transformed, triggering a cascade of secrets across generations. Treats the hidden-world concept with genuine gravity and scope.
But It's dense, multilayered, and requires sustained attention. Subtitled. Rewatching earlier seasons becomes necessary as mythology unfolds. Not casual viewing.
