Little Demon

A darkly comic riff on blended families where the blended part is literally demonic. Danny DeVito voices a surprisingly charming Satan trying to co-parent his Antichrist daughter while she and her mom just want a normal life in Delaware. It's gore-splattered, absurdly funny, and genuinely tender underneath the horrors.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like crude, deadpan family comedy with a horror edge, where the dark premise is played for awkward domestic laughs rather than scares.

Skip it if you need genuine scares or tight plotting; it is scrappy and sometimes rough, and its devil-bargaining gags can wear thin across its ten short episodes.

What it asks of you: Half-hour episodes, ten in all, so it's a weekend binge that moves quickly, with a deliberately flat, sitcom rhythm and a dark streak you have to sit with.

Harley Quinn2019

Irreverent adult animation that finds real warmth between the chaos. Harley and Poison Ivy's relationship has the same goofy-then-genuine quality as Laura and Chrissy, filtered through DC Comics violence and a chaotic energy that never quits.

But The animation is deliberately rough and the jokes come so fast some will miss. If you need polish or plot consistency, look elsewhere.

Disenchantment2018

Matt Groening's fantasy comedy has the same sensibility: monsters, magic, and characters trying to forge genuine connection in an absurd world. Princess Bean's relationship with her father mirrors the show's family dynamics beautifully.

But It drags in places and loses focus across seasons. The mythology stuff sometimes overwhelms the character moments you actually care about.

Invincible2021

Animated superhero that swings between brutal action and genuine family heartbreak. Like Little Demon, it refuses to let violence or horror undercut the real emotional stakes of people who love each other.

But Much darker and more sustained in its brutality. If you watch for the laughs, you might find yourself in heavier territory than expected.

Something you would not have found on your own.

Hellboy Animated: Sword of Storms2006

Both use gore and supernatural grotesquerie in service of found family stories. They're equally comfortable with demons, laughs, and actual emotional stakes.

A 30-minute animated supernatural comedy where a gruff antihero deals with monsters and weirdness while maintaining genuine affection for the people around him. Mike Mignola's sensibility matches Little Demon's: dark, funny, surprisingly kind.

But This is a standalone film, not a series—you get one evening, not a season. Also from 2006, so the animation won't blow you away by modern standards.

The Owl House2020

A Disney show with teeth. Demon realms, found family, real stakes, and a willingness to let its characters be messy and complicated. The heart-to-horror ratio feels kindred.

But Started as a Disney Channel show, so the early episodes feel softer. It takes a few eps to find its footing.

The Owl House poster

Amphibia2019

Deceptively smart comedy-adventure about a girl trapped in a frog world. The emotional core about found family and belonging is genuine, and the show earns its darker moments by never losing its sense of fun.

But More wholesome than Little Demon—some viewers want their comedy weirder and darker. Also animated for a younger audience initially, though it grows up.

Amphibia poster

BoJack Horseman2014

Animal comedy that uses absurdity as cover for devastating character study. It masters tonal shifts: laugh-out-loud then quietly tragic. The show understands dysfunctional families better than almost anything.

But Relentlessly bleak by season three. Some episodes sit with sadness longer than many viewers want. It's brilliant but it can hurt.

BoJack Horseman poster

Undone2019

Rotoscoped animation, magical realism, genuine mystery. A young woman's relationship with her family becomes the story, grounded in real emotion despite the supernatural weirdness. Gorgeous and strange.

But Only two seasons exist. Feels incomplete. Also moves slower than Little Demon—contemplative instead of frenetic.

Arcane: League of Legends2021

Animated adaptation that justifies its existence through pure craft and storytelling. Family dynamics (broken, loving, complicated) anchor a show about magic and class warfare. Stunning to watch.

But Slower paced and more dramatic. If you want quick laughs and constant chaos, this is more measured. Also, extremely violent.

Arcane: League of Legends poster

Tuca & Bertie2019

Surreal comedy about female friendship and mess. Absurdist humor grounded in actual tenderness. No plot in the traditional sense—just two people navigating life's chaos together, which is what Little Demon does with parent-child dynamics.

But Very experimental. Some sketches don't land. Not everyone clicks with abstract, stream-of-consciousness comedy.

Tuca & Bertie poster

Moral Orel2005

Both use comedic absurdity to sneak in real family drama. Both refuse to let the monsters or the darkness prevent sincere moments between people who love each other.

Adult Swim stop-motion about a religious kid in a twisted town. Hilarious and horrifying in equal measure—then devastatingly, unexpectedly human. Proves animation can be pitch-black AND genuinely moving.

But Very dark satirical look at religion and abuse. The tonal shifts from cartoon chaos to serious trauma are jarring. Not everyone wants their comedy to sit with real pain.

Moral Orel poster

Craig of the Creek2018

Same core DNA: misfits building family outside traditional structures, grounded character work under fantastical circumstances. Just completely different tonal register—the inverse registers of the same emotional engine.

A kids' show that's genuinely excellent—funny, beautifully drawn, with real stakes and diverse characters. Focuses on found family and belonging. Proves that wholesome comedy and actual depth aren't contradictions.

But Significantly more upbeat and gentler than Little Demon. If you're watching for the gore and blasphemy, this will feel aggressively earnest and sincere instead.
