Television series
Aggretsuko
A Japanese office comedy about a put-upon red panda who screams death metal into a karaoke machine to survive her soul-crushing job. It's absurdist, weirdly cathartic, and genuinely funny—proof that animated comedy can be sharp, weird, and deeply human all at once.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy office comedy with a sharp bite, where a cute surface hides a simmering rage and the jokes land because they admit how grinding a job can be.
Skip it if you need strong plot momentum or a show that stays light, since the cute animation sits on a steady undercurrent of workplace gloom and the gags can circle one grievance.
What it asks of you: Each episode runs about seventeen minutes, so it's a breezy habit rather than a commitment, though the five seasons add up quickly.

If you liked this
BoJack Horseman2014
Like Aggretsuko, it uses an animal protagonist to explore the gulf between who we pretend to be and who we actually are, mixing comedy with surprisingly raw emotional truths about work, friendship and self-sabotage.
But The comedy is often pitched darker than you might expect, and the show takes extended detours into genuinely bleak territory that can feel exhausting.

Arcane: League of Legends2021
Proof that animation can be visually stunning and narratively complex without losing humor or heart. It has the same commitment to making its world feel lived-in and its characters feel real.
But The pacing is deliberately slow in places, and if you need constant plot momentum you'll find stretches that feel static.

Disenchantment2018
Matt Groening's absurdist fantasy comedy about a woman refusing to fit into the role her world demands. It has Aggretsuko's DNA—workplace frustration transmuted into surreal, funny rebellion.
But The humor is wildly uneven across episodes, and some arcs resolve in unsatisfying ways that can make you feel like time was wasted.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Little Demon2022
Both are about women coping with an unjust world through dark comedy and refusal. Aggretsuko channels it into death metal; Little Demon channels it into spite and profanity.
An animated comedy about a woman dealing with an impossible life circumstance by gritting her teeth and showing up. The humor comes from her refusal to perform gratitude or acceptance for a rigged situation.
But It's far more grotesque and crude than Aggretsuko, and the comedy lands on cruelty in ways that might feel mean rather than cathartic.

Daria1997
A deadpan comedy about surviving a world that makes no sense, narrated by someone too smart to pretend it does. The spiritual ancestor of Aggretsuko's specific flavor of quiet fury.
But It's from 1997, which means the animation is flat and the pacing assumes you're watching on MTV between other things.

Harley Quinn2019
A cartoon about a woman building a life outside the identity imposed on her, with genuine heart underneath the chaos. Funny, weird, surprisingly touching about female friendship and self-determination.
But The first season is erratic in tone, and the show's commitment to graphic violence and sex jokes will alienate anyone looking for lighter fare.

Inside Job2021
An animated office comedy about a brilliant woman trapped in an incompetent system, fighting her way through absurdist bureaucracy. Short episodes, sharp writing, and real affection for its characters.
But It was cancelled after one season on a cliffhanger, so you'll finish unsatisfied and knowing there's no more coming.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners2022
A studio Trigger anime about characters fighting against a system designed to grind them down. Gorgeous animation, strong character work, and genuine emotional weight beneath the neon and gunfire.
But It's significantly more violent and tragic than Aggretsuko, and the ending will leave you raw rather than catharted.

Castlevania: Nocturne2023
Adult animation with real craft behind it—beautiful, ambitious, and committed to developing its characters beyond the surface action. Shows what the medium can do when it's given proper resources and respect.
But It's gothic and serious in a way that will feel like watching a completely different genre from Aggretsuko.

Spaced1999
Both are workplace/life comedies that use surreal genre flourishes (Spaced's jump cuts and anime references, Aggretsuko's death metal) to express emotional truths that straight comedy couldn't quite reach.
A live-action UK comedy about young adults pretending to have their lives together while falling apart quietly. It's less supernatural than Aggretsuko but carries the same energy—visual comedy, narrative playfulness, and characters you actually like.
But It's 25 years old and shot on DV video, so it looks and feels very much of its moment in a way that takes adjustment.
