Beastars

A gorgeous anime about a wolf trying to fit into a world that fears him. Beastars blends coming-of-age drama with genuine mystery, wrapping social anxiety and prejudice in a richly textured world of anthropomorphic animals. It's sincere without being simple, visually stunning, and deeply compelling for viewers who want their anime to matter.

TVMaze rating3.5

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like school dramas where teenage awkwardness feels real and the animal metaphors do quiet work on questions of prejudice, desire and belonging, rather than just serving as cute mascots.

Skip it if you want something light and breezy, because it sits with discomfort and heavy moods, and its long, talky stretches can drag if romance and school gossip bore you.

What it asks of you: Around forty-eight episodes of roughly twenty-five minutes each, so it is a committed binge, and it rewards patience with slow scenes that gather weight rather than rushing toward jolts.

Odd Taxi2021

A puzzle-box mystery set in an anthropomorphic world where every detail matters. The writing is sharp, the reveals genuinely earned, and the cast of animal characters all have real depth. Unexpectedly gripping.

But The first episode takes patience—you need to sit with confusion before the structure reveals itself. Some plot threads can feel dense.

Carole & Tuesday2019

Two outsiders building a life together on Mars. It shares Beastars' sense of visual beauty, character focus, and the idea that small moments of human (or humanoid) connection matter more than plot mechanics.

But The pacing is genuinely meandering. If you want propulsive narrative, this will test you.

Michiko e Hatchin2008

A stunning exploration of two outsiders—a freed woman and an abandoned boy—finding family with each other. Raw, visually inventive, and unafraid of making you sit with real social ugliness and small moments of grace.

But It's live-action, not anime, and darker in register. The animation is unconventional in ways that won't appeal to everyone.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Aggretsuko2018

Both use anthropomorphic characters to map the weight of social expectation onto inner life. Where Beastars is melancholy and introspective, Aggretsuko is sardonic and cathartic—two sides of the same coin about performance versus authenticity.

A stop-motion anime about rage and survival in the adult world. Like Beastars, it uses animals to explore social pressure and the gap between who you are and who you're allowed to be, but it's angrier, funnier, and messier about it.

But Much shorter episodes, much lighter tone. The whimsical aesthetic can read as cute rather than thoughtful if you're expecting Beastars' drama.

Jujutsu Kaisen2020

High school genre anime with genuine character work underneath the spectacular action. Yuji feels like Legoshi's cousin—an anxious kid trying to be worthy of his place in a dangerous world.

But Action-focused where Beastars is contemplative. The pacing is relentless in a way that drowns quieter moments.

SK∞2021

A gorgeous anime about outsiders bonding over passion. Visually inventive, emotionally genuine, and surprisingly tender. The relationship between its leads has real weight.

But The narrative is thin. It's more interested in mood and character than plot, which some viewers will find frustrating.

Great Pretender2020

An anime about connection across difference, set across continents. Stylish, warm-hearted, and genuinely funny. The found-family dynamic is as sincere as Beastars makes it look effortless.

But A heist show at heart, so if you're not invested in the con, you'll feel adrift. Some episodes work better than others.

Sora yori mo Tooi Basho A Story that leads to the Antarctica2018

Four misfits on a journey together, learning that belonging means being seen. Charming, sincere, visually clean. The character work is genuine even when the tone is lighter than Beastars.

But Considerably more optimistic and less complex. It trades Beastars' ambiguity for straightforward warmth, which flattens the stakes.

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!2020

Both privilege visual storytelling and mood over plot. Both are about finding your tribe among the people who see you. Eizouken is bright where Beastars is shadowed, but they share the same emotional architecture.

An anime about creating anime, made with dazzling visual invention. Three misfits building something together. It has Beastars' deep visual intelligence and the same sense that small, sincere things matter.

But Fundamentally about art and process rather than character drama. If you want narrative momentum, this moves sideways.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners2022

Both follow a young protagonist learning that they cannot fit into the world as it is. Where Beastars offers the possibility of slowly building understanding, Edgerunners suggests the system itself is the problem. They're asking the same question from opposite directions.

A cyberpunk tragedy about a kid and a outcast finding each other in a brutal world. Stunning animation, real stakes, genuine heartbreak. It has Beastars' seriousness and visual beauty but moves at a sprinter's pace.

But It's violent, cynical, and ends badly. The tone is relentlessly dark. If you need hope, this will exhaust you.
