Kyle XY
Kyle XY is a mystery-driven teen drama about a brilliant, emotionally-blank boy who appears from nowhere with no past and no navel. The Trager family takes him in while Kyle discovers human feeling, connection, and his own origins. It's earnest, genuinely weird, and deeply invested in whether this strange kid can learn to be human—or whether he ever was.

Sense82015
A sprawling ensemble mystery about interconnected strangers discovering strange abilities and a hidden truth about themselves. Like Kyle XY, it's fascinated by the question of what makes someone human and whether identity is fixed or invented.
But Much longer per season, deliberately slow-burn pacing, and the narrative ambition sometimes outpaces clarity. You have to stay patient.

The OA2016
A young woman emerges from captivity with no memory and sudden abilities, moving in with a family who must help her piece together her identity and purpose. Same central mystery engine: Who is this person? Where did they come from? What are they capable of?
But Cancelled after two seasons on a cliffhanger. The ambition gets increasingly baroque, and not all of it lands.

Manifest2018
A plane lands after five years missing, and the passengers are changed—slowly developing strange abilities while a conspiracy unfolds around them. Same blend of personal mystery, family drama, and sci-fi weirdness. Tightly plotted and genuinely compelling for the first two seasons.
But The show runs out of runway and the resolution feels rushed. Viewers will feel that final-season stretch.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Awakenings1990
Both are fascinated by the threshold between non-consciousness and human feeling. Kyle learning to feel mirrors the awakened patients learning to live again. Both ask: what happens when you suddenly must become human?
Based on true events: a doctor awakens patients who have been catatonic for decades, and they must learn to inhabit a world they no longer recognize. Profound meditation on consciousness returning, identity reformed by time, and the terror of waking up.
But Deliberately paced. Not plot-driven. The emotional weight is the entire point, which can feel slow if you want action.

Fringe2008
A brilliant but emotionally-damaged young woman joins a team investigating impossible phenomena and gradually discovers her own unusual nature. It shares Kyle XY's fascination with identity, family, and the cost of being different—plus some genuinely unsettling sci-fi.
But Takes several episodes to find its footing, and the mythology gets convoluted. Some seasons work better than others.

Star-Crossed2014
Alien teenagers, raised in detention, suddenly integrate into human high school. It's an obvious DNA match for Kyle: outsider navigating humanity, forced family bonds, teen romance, and the question of belonging versus biological destiny.
But Cancelled after one season. It never gets the full story it deserves, and the ending is abrupt.

Dark2017
A missing child triggers a mystery that unravels across time, revealing that multiple teenagers have strange origins and hidden connections. Gorgeously shot, genuinely mysterious, and asks profound questions about fate and who we're supposed to be.
But German, subtitled. Dense plotting means you cannot look away or skip scenes. Very dark in tone—no levity.

Orphan Black2013
A woman discovers she's part of an underground network of clones—all the same person, all completely different. Like Kyle, it's about identity, family, conspiracy, and learning to feel. Tatiana Maslany gives an absolutely transformative performance.
But The science gets hand-wavy and the later seasons lose focus. The ending divides fans sharply.

The Prisoner1967
A man wakes up in a mysterious village where nothing is as it seems and his identity is under constant interrogation. It's a spiritual ancestor to Kyle XY—obsessed with the self, memory, and whether identity is real or constructed by forces beyond our control.
But Deliberately cryptic and abstract. Made in 1967 on a small budget. If you need everything explained, this will frustrate you.

Altered Carbon2018
A man is brought back from death in a new body and must navigate a world where identity and consciousness have been separated from flesh. Explores what it means to be yourself when your body is negotiable—the inverse of Kyle's question.
But Visually dense cyberpunk that can overwhelm. Cancelled after two seasons. Very adult in tone and content.

The Vast of Night2019
Both center on teenagers discovering they live in a world far stranger than anyone told them. Both are mysteries that expand outward from a single question: what is really happening here? Both trust the audience to sit with uncertainty.
Two teenagers in 1950s New Mexico investigate a strange signal and uncover a conspiracy that rewrites their understanding of reality. Shot like a lost Twilight Zone episode, with genuine mystery and atmosphere. Beautiful and strange and completely committed to its own logic.
But Takes its time building. Very little happens in a conventional sense. If you want to know the 'what,' this is patient about the 'why.'

Big1988
Both explore what it means to be unprepared for the body you inhabit and the world you've entered. Kyle learns to be human from the outside in; Josh learns to navigate adulthood as an outsider. Both are ultimately about the strangeness of growing up, just from opposite directions.
A child wakes up in an adult body and must navigate adulthood while remaining emotionally a child. Funny and touching—Tom Hanks nails the awkwardness of a kid pretending to be grown-up. It's the inverse premise of Kyle XY, but the same central emotional question.
But A family film from 1988. The stakes are low and the tone is light. If you need darkness or intensity, this won't give it to you.
