Funny You Should Ask
- Comedy
- Light-hearted
- Dip in and out
A half-hour game show where comedians answer trivia questions twice—first with jokes, then truthfully—while contestants guess which answer is real. It's broad, fast-paced fun built entirely around whether you find the comedians funny. If you like your game shows loud and silly, this delivers exactly that.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy quick-witted riffing on trivia, the back-and-forth between comics matters more to you than any prize, and you like cheering one-liners more than the stakes.
Skip it if the format is a loose, noisy scramble, so if you want a tidy game with real tension, the nonstop laughter may wear thin fast.
What it asks of you: Half-hour episodes that move briskly, with your attention split between the joke, the answer and the contestant's gut call. Little to hold onto between episodes.

Match Game2016
Celebrities riff on fill-in-the-blank prompts in a format that prizes humor and personality over knowledge. Same DNA as Funny You Should Ask: comedians being funny is the whole point, and the game is just the frame.
But The jokes lean heavily on innuendo and rely on a house style that isn't for everyone. If you prefer game shows where the game itself matters, this prioritizes laughs first.

Password2022
Celebrities give one-word clues to help contestants guess phrases, and the best moments come from their witty lateral thinking. It's about smart play and personality, with real stakes that make the humor land harder.
But The format requires you to care about word association and puzzle-solving, not just celebrity antics. Less chaotic than Funny You Should Ask, more cerebral.

I Can See Your Voice2020
A celebrity panel reads lip movements and character to guess whether mystery singers are good or bad, creating absurd comedy from their confident wrongness. High energy, lots of laughter, celebrities at their most unfiltered.
But The premise is genuinely silly and the actual singing part feels secondary. If you need real musical talent on display, you'll find it irritating.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
@midnight2013
Both use comedians as the main attraction in a trivia-based game where personality and humor matter more than actual knowledge, but @midnight demanded genuinely clever responses rather than just loud ones.
Three comedians compete in internet-culture trivia and wordplay games, rewarding quick wit and cultural knowledge in equal measure. It's Funny You Should Ask's smarter sibling—the comedians are sharper and the jokes land with more precision.
But Heavy on millennial meme culture and internet references; if you're not online, entire rounds will miss you. Also cancelled after six seasons, so no current cultural relevance.

The Celebrity Dating Game2021
Awkward romantic chemistry meets celebrity banter in a revival built around comedians and personalities you want to hear talk. Genuinely funny because the format creates real moments of discomfort and charm.
But Dating game shows can feel aimless and the stakes are low. If you want narrative or genuine romance, this is purely comedic performance.

Whose Line Is It Anyway?1998
Four comedians improvise sketches and games where nothing is scripted and the points don't matter—pure comedy gymnastics. If you love watching smart, fast comedians riff, this is the gold standard.
But Improv comedy is hit-or-miss by nature; dead sketches still have to play out. Some performers carry episodes while others flounder, and you have to sit through both.

Hollywood Squares2003
Nine celebrities occupy a tic-tac-toe grid and answer trivia questions with jokes; contestants win by predicting if they're right or wrong. It's Funny You Should Ask's spiritual ancestor—same formula, decades of charm.
But Older sensibility, slower pacing than modern game shows. The celebrity roster matters enormously and not every season has a great one.

Snap Judgment2011
A rapid-fire improv-meets-storytelling show where comedians react to wild stories and prompts, keeping you constantly laughing. Chaotic, absurd, and rewards truly inventive comedians.
But The format is so loose it can feel shapeless. Without strong performers, it becomes exhausting noise rather than comedy.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy1981
Both rely on comedians making jokes from impossible premises, but Hitchhiker's builds something stranger and more imaginative—the game show turns that impulse inward, while Hitchhiker's builds entire worlds from absurdity.
A surreal, scientifically absurd comedy miniseries where the humor comes from impossible situations explained with perfect deadpan logic. British, weird, and genuinely inventive in ways that make you laugh and think.
But It's slow-paced sci-fi with a deliberately flat affect; if you expect American game-show energy, this will feel like watching paint dry in space. Cult classic, not crowd-pleaser.

Taskmaster2015
Like Funny You Should Ask, it's built around comedians being funny within absurd constraints, but Taskmaster gives them physical challenges and genuine competition rather than just question-answering, making the comedy feel earned rather than performed.
A British panel show where comedians attempt bizarre, impossible tasks and are scored by an arbiter who delights in pedantry. Pure improv-based comedy with real stakes, wildly inventive solutions, and comedians genuinely trying to outwit each other.
But British sensibility and dry wit throughout; the American version loses something crucial. Very long episodes with extended task sequences that feel indulgent if you're impatient.
