Anne Boleyn
A taut psychological thriller set in Anne Boleyn's final months, treating Tudor politics as a claustrophobic power game. Jodie Turner-Smith's Anne is intelligent, desperate, and trapped—less costume drama than a woman fighting for survival and her daughter's future against impossible odds. Gripping and claustrophobic.

The Crown2016
Prestige historical drama where power corrupts and private people bear public burdens. Lavish production, excellent acting, and real emotional weight beneath the palace intrigue.
But Enormously long; the early seasons move slowly, and some viewers object to the invented scenes presenting fiction as fact.

Wolf Hall2015
Thomas Cromwell orchestrates Anne's downfall in this adaptation of Hilary Mantel. Dense, intelligent, and utterly gripping—the other side of the same story, beautifully made.
But Visually murky and deliberately slow-paced. Demands close attention; you cannot watch this while scrolling.

All the King's Men2006
A politician's rise and fall in a claustrophobic power structure where everyone's complicit. Superb ensemble cast and a real sense of doom hanging over every scene.
But The accent work is distracting, and the moral ambiguity frustrates viewers who want clear heroes and villains.

Something you would not have found on your own.
A Man for All Seasons1966
The same king, the same court machinery, the same ruthlessness—but from inside a man's principled refusal rather than a woman's desperate fight. Morally the inverse.
Thomas More stands against Henry VIII in a perfectly crafted play-adaptation. Intelligent, moving, and about the cost of conscience—the opposite angle on the same historical moment.
But Deeply theatrical and formally distant. Shot in stark black-and-white with a deliberate pace that feels remote to modern viewers.

The Favourite2018
Female ambition, court politics, and survival tactics under a monarch's whim. Wickedly entertaining with genuine pathos, and constantly surprising in tone and structure.
But The tonal shifts between comedy and cruelty can feel jarring. Some find the camp registers too heavily.

Gentleman Jack2019
Historical drama about a woman asserting agency and desire in a suffocating patriarchal world. Warm, intelligent, genuinely funny—and Anne Boleyn fans will recognize the stakes.
But The Yorkshire dialect is thick, and pacing varies across seasons. It's slower and more affectionate than Anne Boleyn.

The Other Boleyn Girl2008
Two sisters vying for Henry VIII's favor in a world where women are currency. Fast-paced, visually sumptuous, and genuinely tense about the cost of royal attention.
But It invents liberally from history, and some performances feel more soap opera than drama. Lighter in tone than you might expect.

Alias Grace2017
Adaptation of Margaret Atwood's novel about a woman at the mercy of male systems. Complex, beautifully shot, and explores how women control narrative when they control nothing else.
But The non-linear structure is demanding, and the central mystery unfolds slowly. Some find the pacing frustrating.

Mary Queen of Scots2018
Two queens navigating patriarchy, ambition, and the impossibility of winning. Visually striking and emotionally direct about power, gender, and legacy.
But Historically very loose. The tone is earnest in a way that occasionally undercuts the drama.

I, Claudius1976
A masterclass in palace intrigue, poison, ambition, and survival. Dated in style but utterly gripping—the template for everything that followed, and the acting is superb.
But The 1970s video quality takes adjustment, and the pacing is glacial by modern standards. Very British in register.
