Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love a Western built on swagger, sharp dialogue and a friendship that crackles between two stubborn men, with gunfights that land hard when they finally come.

Skip it if you want a slow, meditative frontier story; this one talks fast, plays its humour broadly in places, and runs past two hours with a lot of rowdy saloon energy.

What it asks of you: Settle in for just over two hours of brisk, talky scenes that build toward loud, violent set pieces, with the mood swinging between wry banter and sudden bursts of danger.

But It's deliberately unglamorous and slow-burning; if you want more swagger and quotable one-liners, this will feel like a comedown.

John Ford's classic take on the same Earp-Holliday legend, shot in gorgeous black-and-white with a stillness Tombstone never allows itself. Seeing the story told straight makes you appreciate Tombstone's excess even more.

But It's a product of its era — mannered, dialogue-heavy, and historically loose in ways modern viewers might find quaint rather than thrilling.

A big-cast, big-hearted ensemble Western with the same sense of fun Tombstone has — heroes with style, villains with menace, and shootouts staged for maximum crowd-pleasing spectacle.

But It's lighter and more old-fashioned in its morality, without the real-history weight or the Kilmer-level scene-stealing performance to anchor it.

Same frontier, same era, even a cameo from Earp — but told as serialized, ambiguous drama instead of a clean myth of good guys and bad guys.

A profane, novelistic HBO series set in the same lawless frontier world, where Wyatt Earp himself briefly rides through. It trades Tombstone's mythic clarity for moral murk and some of the best dialogue ever written for TV.

But It's slow, dense, and demands patience with Shakespearean-level profanity and plotting; there's no tidy shootout catharsis waiting at the end of an episode.

3:10 to Yuma2007

Christian Bale and Russell Crowe do a tense, character-driven two-hander that captures the same charged rivalry-turned-respect dynamic Earp and Ringo share, but tighter and meaner.

But It's a smaller, more intimate film — don't expect the sprawling ensemble or the operatic scale of Tombstone's showdowns.

Open Range2003

Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall bring a quieter, more meditative Western about men who'd rather not fight but will when pushed — the moral backbone under Tombstone's bravado, laid bare.

But The pace is patient almost to a fault; the climactic gunfight is great, but you'll wait a long while to get there.

A team of gunfighters defending a town they don't owe anything to — the same camaraderie-under-fire energy that makes Earp's crew so much fun to watch ride together.

But It's much longer, much more solemn, and widely considered the less fun version of this exact tale — go in with tempered expectations.

A gritty, unglamorous look at outlaw brothers and violence as family business, with a stunt-heavy shootout that rivals Tombstone's for sheer nerve. Real acting siblings play the outlaw clans.

But It's dustier, drier, and less concerned with charisma than Tombstone — a colder history lesson dressed as an action picture.

Yojimbo1961

This is one of the films that shaped the Western genre itself — the lone armed stranger restoring order to a lawless town is the blueprint Tombstone is still running.

Kurosawa's tale of a wandering swordsman who cleans up a corrupt town by pitting two rival gangs against each other — the exact structural DNA that fed into the American Western Tombstone belongs to.

But Black-and-white, subtitled, and Japanese in setting and rhythm — a real leap for viewers who only want cowboys and English dialogue.

Rango2011

Same genre bones and love of Western mythmaking, but played for laughs in a family-friendly register — proof the swagger Tombstone takes seriously can also be a joke.

An animated comedy Western that's surprisingly loving and knowing about genre tropes — corrupt towns, gunfighter mythology, showdown theatrics — filtered through a lizard hero and a script stuffed with Sergio Leone homages.

But It's a kids' film first, and the humor and pacing are built for a much younger, less bloodthirsty audience than Tombstone's.
