The Heroic Trio
- Action
- Relentless
A 1993 Hong Kong action-fantasy about three women with superpowers—invisibility, super strength, and martial arts mastery—who band together to stop a baby-stealing conspiracy. It's gleefully pulpy sci-fi with gravity-defying stunts, a paper-thin plot that exists only to connect absurd set pieces, and three charismatic leads having obvious fun. Pure genre entertainment for people who want spectacle over sense.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love superhero-style action built on comic-book playfulness, where three charismatic women carry the whole film and the fights have a joyful, cartoonish snap.
Skip it if you need a tight, realistic plot, since the story is loose, goofy and happy to leap across tones, and its effects show their 1993 age next to modern blockbusters.
What it asks of you: It runs a brisk eighty-eight minutes and rarely pauses, so expect quick cuts, sudden shifts from brawl to playful gag and little time spent on quiet reflection.

If you liked this
Wonder Woman2017
A superhero origin story with genuine emotional stakes and a lead who brings real presence to action scenes. Like *Heroic Trio*, it finds grandeur in female heroes and commits fully to its fantastical premise.
But The third act devolves into CGI spectacle and philosophical speeches. Some find the tonal shifts between intimate scenes and bombast jarring.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon2000
Wuxia cinema elevated to art, with breathtaking wire-work choreography and a cast of formidable women. Shares *Heroic Trio*'s joy in defying physics and its belief that women make better action heroes.
But It's meditative and mythic where you might expect propulsive. The pacing is deliberate; if you want constant motion, this restraint will feel slow.

Charlie's Angels2000
Three women, outrageous action, no apologies for fun. It's got the same cheerful disregard for plausibility and the same conviction that style and charm matter as much as logic.
But The plot is tissue-thin and the humour lands unevenly. It's aggressively lightweight in a way some find exhausting rather than entertaining.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Naked Lunch1991
Both films reject naturalism entirely. They're not trying to make you believe in their worlds—they're inviting you to *enjoy* the strangeness. Coherence isn't the point; mood and spectacle are.
Cronenberg's surrealist adaptation of Burroughs, where reality glitches and logic collapses. Like *Heroic Trio*, it trusts the audience to follow something that makes dream-sense rather than narrative sense, and it's visually intoxicating.
But It's deliberately incoherent and deeply weird. If you need plot clarity and conventional storytelling, this will feel like pretentious noise.

Mad Max: Fury Road2015
Two hours of pure kinetic energy where every frame is composed like a painting. The action is so clearly choreographed you can follow it; it respects the audience's eyes the way *Heroic Trio* respects theirs.
But There is almost no dialogue and virtually no character development. If you need narrative meat, this will feel like watching a two-hour chase scene.

Kill Bill: Vol. 12003
Tarantino's love letter to pulp cinema, anime, and action heroines. It shares *Heroic Trio*'s gleeful genre-mashing and the same understanding that spectacle and style are their own justification.
But The violence is graphic and sexual. The non-linear storytelling can feel like indulgence, and the homaging sometimes overwhelms the story itself.

The Five Venoms1978
A kung fu masterpiece about five women (and men) with specialized fighting styles. It's where Hong Kong action cinema learned to make bodies do impossible things, and *Heroic Trio* is its spiritual heir.
But It's slower-paced than modern action films and the dubbing is occasionally distracting. Some fight scenes are talky by contemporary standards.

Atomic Blonde2017
A spy thriller that uses its female lead's body as the primary spectacle. Like *Heroic Trio*, it trusts a woman to carry an action film and shoots her fights with clarity and style.
But The plot is generic Cold War espionage. Underneath the excellent action is fairly thin narrative scaffolding.

Bound1996
The Wachowskis' debut about two women outsmarting criminals. It has *Heroic Trio*'s confidence in female agency and its understanding that genre films can be smart and entertaining simultaneously.
But It's a low-budget thriller, not an action spectacular. The pacing is measured; adrenaline junkies may find it too controlled.

Ultraviolet2006
A stylish sci-fi action film that commits entirely to its visual excess and doesn't pretend logic matters. It has the same fearless embrace of the absurd that makes *Heroic Trio* so winning.
But The CGI has dated poorly and the plot makes almost no sense. It's widely dismissed as a failure; that reputation may colour your viewing.

Millennium Actress2002
Both films understand that genre is a language, not a cage. They speak it fluently but also play with it, mixing registers and breaking their own rules for effect. Both trust their audience to enjoy the game.
An animated film about an actress's life told through the movies she's appeared in. Visually inventive, emotionally complex, and it plays with genre and reality the way *Heroic Trio* does, but with melancholy instead of pulp energy.
But It's deliberately fragmented and the emotional payoff requires patience. Animation may seem like a barrier if you're expecting live-action spectacle.
